About The Position

The Discovery Overnight Camp Assistant Manager plays a vital leadership role in supporting the daily rhythm, logistics, and camper experience of Keystone Science School’s Discovery Camp. This position is ideal for an experienced staff member who knows the flow of camp and is ready to take on greater responsibility behind the scenes and on the ground. Working closely with the Discovery Overnight Camp Manager, the Assistant Manager helps ensure each session runs smoothly, including preparing counselors for new camper groups, supporting staff through behavioral challenges, parent communication, and day-to-day logistics. As a steady presence for both campers and counselors, this role steps in as a point person when senior leadership is off-site and plays a key role in maintaining a positive, inclusive, and well-supported camp culture throughout the summer.

Requirements

  • Have an interest in, respect for, and ability to work with children and people with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to create an inclusive learning environment for campers from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to remain calm, flexible, and resourceful in fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
  • Works effectively across departments and with leadership to achieve organizational goals.
  • Understanding of best practices in camp programming, risk management, and experiential education.
  • Prior experience working in overnight or day camp settings, preferably at Keystone Science School or a similar program in a leadership position.
  • Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR certifications, from an approved vendor, or the ability to obtain before the first day of employment (KSS does offer an on-site WFA course before staff training in May at the expense of the individual).
  • Age 20+ with an excellent driving record and a valid driver’s license.
  • Dexterity, auditory and visual acuity to operate computers and phones or mobile devices.
  • Auditory and visual acuity to interact with guests, sponsors, donors and clients on a daily basis.
  • Able to work for long periods of time without break.
  • Able to lift 25 lbs. with minimal assistance.
  • Able to successfully manage multiple, high priority tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Outdoor recreation experience in hiking, camping, backpacking or rock climbing.
  • Knowledge of science based curriculum (e.g. forest ecology, geology, biology).

Responsibilities

  • Camp Operations & Daily Logistics Support the Discovery Camp Manager with daily operations, scheduling, and logistics to ensure smooth session transitions
  • Assist with overnight packing, supply coordination, and other logistical needs
  • Serve as a leadership point person when the Discovery Camp Manager and Director of Programs are not on-site
  • Conduct evening check-ins to support bedtime routines
  • Support other KSS programming (Day Camp and Adventure) as needed
  • Staff Support & Leadership Provide real-time support to counselors navigating camper conflict, homesickness, and behavioral concern
  • Support counselors in addressing co-counselor challenges and offering constructive feedback
  • Assist with trainings and provide ongoing coaching and feedback to staff
  • Help cultivate a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented culture
  • Support staff wellness by providing coverage and breaks when needed
  • Camp Preparation & Camper Care Prepare for each incoming camper group by reviewing camper information in advance and flagging key details for counselors, including: Dietary restrictions and allergies Medical needs and emergency medications Mental health considerations Behavioral concerns or support strategies
  • Collaborate with the Discovery Camp Manager to prepare counselors for each new session, including participating in pre-session parent phone calls when needed
  • Facilitate mid-week meetings with the Discovery Camp Manager and overnight staff to review camper concerns and support plans
  • Family & Customer Experience Support Support parent and guardian communication in collaboration with the Discovery Camp Manager and Customer Experience team
  • Help ensure families feel informed, supported, and confident in their campers’ care throughout the session
