About The Position

The Vermont Department of Corrections is seeking a Security & Operations Supervisor at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport. This role involves supervisory, administrative, and coordination responsibilities, including planning, implementing, directing, and evaluating the facility's security and operational procedures. Work is carried out under the general supervision of the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent, in accordance with departmental and facility rules, regulations, and policies.   This position's responsibilities are shared between two incumbents, and we are currently recruiting to fill one vacant role.  All employees of the Agency of Human Services perform their respective functions adhering to four key practices: customer service, holistic service, strengths-based relationships, and results orientation.This position, DOC Security & Operations Supervisor (Job Requisition #54667), is open to all State employees and external applicants. High stress situations are predictable, even frequent. Potential of physical injury is present. Overtime and emergency duty may be necessary, and independent means of transportation is required for emergency response and for travel during work hours. Emergency activities may require search off facility grounds or physical intervention into inmate altercations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or higher AND four (2) years in a correctional system and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • High School diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years in a correctional system involving the custody of inmates and three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Four (4) or more years of military experience INCLUDING two (2) years in a correctional system involving the custody of inmates and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
  • The Department of Corrections does not hire anyone who has been convicted of a felony without a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections.
  • Any person under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction within the past 5 years is likewise ineligible for employment.
  • Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.
  • In accordance with federal regulation, any person applying for employment in the Department of Corrections must provide relevant information.
  • Previous institutional employers will be contacted and required to provide information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during a pending investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse.
