About The Position

Quantum technology is a broad field which is rapidly developing, there are not clear winners for practical large scale quantum computers yet. In this project materials used for superconducting qubits, and their modification by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and atomic layer etching (ALE) will be explored. The source of two levels states (TLS) in quantum systems is an active area of research, but the surfaces of super conducting metals (E.g. Al, Nb, Ta), including amorphous surface oxides are hypothesized to be a source of decoherence in these systems which are some of the leading platforms for quantum computers. This project will explore novel ways to clean and passivate these surfaces, which will include controlled etching of amorphous surface oxides, deposition of well-defined surface oxides and nitrides, and characterization of the deposition/etch processes. Through this project, you will gain knowledge of surface chemical reactions, learn techniques for characterizing thin films, and test their applicability for industrial use. You will be joining a group of highly motivated scientists and students utilizing ALD for a diverse range of applications, giving you the opportunity to explore and contribute to these projects.
