Economist/Senior Economist - Gabon, Central II Division, AFR

International Monetary FundWashington, DC

About The Position

Work for the IMF. Work for the World. The African Department, Central II Division, is looking for an economist to join the country team to work on Gabon. Gabon is an oil rich country, with substantial potential in other commodity sectors (manganese, timber) and agribusiness. As the third largest member of CEMAC, Gabon has been playing a key role in the development and implementation of a regional strategy to support the stability of the monetary union. In August 2023, Gabon underwent a major political transition after a coup d’état had overthrown a decades-long regime, but recent general elections have brought the transition period to an end. The new government, in place since January 2026, faces a number of complex macroeconomic challenges, including an unsustainable fiscal position, severe PFM and governance challenges, and weak growth. The new authorities have indicated their interest in pursuing a Fund program within the next 5-6 months, and engagement is intensifying ahead of the likely program and Article IV discussions in late spring of 2026. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to analyzing developments, making projections in a number of sectors and developing policy advice; contribute to the drafting of reports and to the analytical agenda for Article IV discussions; and liaise with the CEMAC regional team. He/she would ideally be experienced either with the analysis of the fiscal sector (where heightened attention to inaccurate reporting may be needed) or with running the full desk and coordinating the activities of the team. The interaction between country-specific policies and the regional CEMAC strategy also offers an opportunity to make analytical contributions that can go beyond the specific country assignment. The countries covered by Central II Division are Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Republic of Congo, and CEMAC. Any questions related to the desk assignment can be directed to Ms. Aliona Cebotari, Mission Chief Gabon/Division Chief, Central II Division. ACebotari@imf.org
