About The Position

Texas Performing Arts (TPA) is the professional arts presenting and producing program of The University of Texas at Austin. One of the largest and most active university-based performing arts centers in the U.S., TPA is an anchor institution in Austin’s arts, cultural, and entertainment scene. TPA operates venues on the UT campus including Austin’s largest theater, Bass Concert Hall. Its public programs include Broadway in Austin; a curated season of international dance, theater, and music; and presentations of national touring artists. TPA is an integral unit of UT’s College of Fine Arts and engages students across the university in creative experiences. The Emerging Arts Professional program is a season-long paid opportunity for on-the-job learning in arts administration. Participants work within their area of focus to support the growth and programmatic activity of Texas Performing Arts while developing the job skills, understanding of the field, and network connections necessary to begin or advance a professional career in the arts and entertainment industry. Emerging Arts Professionals receive an annual salary and UT Austin’s benefits package. The Event Management Team supports visiting artists and productions within Texas Performing Arts’ presenting portfolio. Our activities include Broadway in Austin; a curated season of international dance, music and theater; and the Texas Welcomes series of touring concerts, comedy and special attractions.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years work experience in arts administration, performing arts production, non-profit management, or community engagement. Student roles can count toward this requirement.
  • Demonstrated intent to pursue a career in professional arts administration or production.
  • Demonstrated reliability, accountability, and ability to follow through on assigned responsibilities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Commitment to providing artist-centered hospitality and contributing to a welcoming, professional environment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond to real-time operational changes during performances and events while maintaining professionalism and composure.
  • Demonstrated competencies in: Teamwork Effective communication (written and spoken) Accuracy and attention to detail Initiative Decision making and critical thinking Problem solving
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive rental vehicles or passenger vans as needed.

  • Prior work experience working in a performing arts organization.

Responsibilities

  • Event Planning & Implementation: Assist in Coordinating and collaborating with other stakeholders such as event production, guest services, ticketing, and marketing/communications.
  • Manage smaller-scale TPA events or projects with increasing independence while supporting large-scale touring productions under the supervision of Event Management staff.
  • Participate in the engagement planning and event management process (artist advance, production advance, day-of-show briefings).
  • Prepare and fulfill artist hospitality requirements (dressing room setups, catering, pre-shops).
  • Assist in supervising student workers and other staff assigned to artist hospitality.
  • Assist with planning and management of artist logistics (flights, hotel accommodations, local ground transportation).
  • Meet artists at point of arrival when required.
  • Drive artists to activity locations as needed.
  • Assisting in planning and carry out special events.
  • Assist in coordinating artist participation in marketing, engagement and development activities (press, meet & greets, class visits, discussions).
  • Assist with expense tracking, petty cash reconciliation, and documentation related to event budgets.
  • Professional Development: Participate in Emerging Arts Professional educational programming including monthly meetings, developmental projects and networking events.
  • Serve as a member of the TPA All-Staff Committee
  • Attend TPA performances and activities.
  • Complete a capstone project or experience
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.
