GRADE 19 LOCATION OF POSITION Maryland Department of the Environment Land and Materials Administration Solid Waste Program 1800 Washington Blvd., Baltimore MD 21230 Main Purpose of Job The Environmental Compliance Specialist Supervisor will serve as the Section Head within the Central Maryland Region for the Solid Waste Program Compliance Division. This is a supervisory position in the Solid Waste Program, Land and Materials Administration of the Maryland Department of the Environment. The incumbent in this position will supervise one of two sections within the Compliance Division. The incumbent will supervise Environmental Compliance Specialists to ensure compliance with Maryland laws and regulations related to sewage sludge utilization, solid waste disposal, scrap tire management, natural wood waste recycling, composting, and coal combustion byproducts. This position supports the Department’s regulatory and environmental protection goals. The incumbent will also assist the Division Chief in providing enforcement oversight within the Central Maryland Region. This position involves the following working conditions: Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. The majority of the job involves work outdoors, in all weather conditions , and takes place at sites and/or facilities where there could be exposures to potential chemicals, dust, odors, etc. Exposure to hazardous conditions that may result in injury. Solid waste facilities and/or sites can potentially cause exposure to known or unknown waste materials that can pose risk through physical, chemical, bacteriological, or radiological hazards for which training is provided. Required use of protective equipment—such as goggles, gloves, and masks—during site visits. The incumbent will be required to drive a State vehicle. If you hold an out-of-state driver’s license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the issuing state’s Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of hire. All individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record to operate a State vehicle.

Requirements

  • Eight years of experience performing environmental regulatory compliance work in the areas of water pollution control; sediment and erosion control; tidal and non-tidal wetlands; flood control and waterway construction; storm water management; coal, non-coal and surface mining; air quality and air management control; solid waste management; hazardous waste control; and oil pollution control.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to obtain and maintain certification or license in the designated environmental compliance area.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in, and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached.
