About The Position

This position administers the City of Charlotte’s Flow Free Program. This program ensures compliance of local businesses with the City of Charlotte’s Sewer Use Ordinance and Grease Trap Policy. Work involves inspecting grease interceptors and traps as well as commercial businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and daycare centers that are required to install, operate, and maintain these devices under the Sewer Use Ordinance. This position also conducts investigations in coordination with other divisions and agencies; collects samples of raw sewage and grease, contacts and informs customers of policy and program requirements. This position also develops and delivers educational outreach presentations and seminars to large and small groups such as association meetings, festivals, and schools.

Requirements

• High School Diploma with three (3) years of work-related experience OR a two (2) year College Degree with one (1) work-related experience.
• Must be able to lift and carry at least 60 pounds and walk sewer lines over rough, uneven terrain.
• Some bending, stooping, and lifting required.
• Requires a valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of plumbing and mechanical/industrial plant processes.
• Knowledge of common computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite of products.
• Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain a City driving permit.
• Ability to observe details.
• Ability to collect wastewater samples

Nice To Haves

• Two- or four-year degree with courses in sciences a plus
• Water and wastewater certifications a plus
• Industrial Pretreatment Program Specialist Certification a plus
• Skill in speaking Spanish (a plus).

Responsibilities

• Ensures compliance of local businesses/industries with the City of Charlotte’s Sewer Use Ordinance and Grease Trap Policy.
• Inspects restaurants/hotels/daycare centers and other customer facilities and sewer connections.
• Enters data into tracking spreadsheet
• Investigate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) or other irregular discharges.
• Research historical data on the collection system, restaurants, or spills.
• Updates database information, completes paperwork, and creates inspection reports.
• Conducts enforcement actions in accordance with the Sewer Use Ordinance and Enforcement Response Plan
• Assists other areas of Charlotte Water.
• Conducts educational outreach presentations and seminars.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
• Serves in a rotational on-call status
