About The Position

VHB is seeking a mid-level Environmental Scientist/Ecologist to join our growing Environmental Services and Energy practice. This position entails both field and office-related work with excellent growth opportunity within a vibrant and expanding environment. This position will be flexible and based out of Albany, NY or Rutland, VT. The successful candidate can expect most fieldwork to occur in the New York Capital Region.

Requirements

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite, mobile data collection, and familiar with various GIS software
  • Self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to grow professionally
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems
  • Strong communication skills between clients and state/federal regulators
  • B.S. in Environmental Science, Ecology, or Natural Resources related field (a Master’s degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience)
  • 1+ years of natural resources fieldwork experience required
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Field experience performing wetland delineations, habitat assessments, and species surveys in the Northeast US preferred
  • Ability and willingness to travel for up to 30% - 60% of working time. Expectation is that travel will be local and only occasional overnights will be required

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with utility operations and linear construction projects a plus
  • Strong understanding and experience preparing State, Federal, and local permit applications preferred
  • Experience performing natural resource surveys and preparing state and federal environmental permit applications in New York a plus
  • New York DEC 4-hour erosion prevention and sediment control certification preferred
  • Experience on active construction sites preferred
  • NY State Article VII and New York State Article VIII preferred

Responsibilities

  • Work within a team of professionals to conduct a wide array of natural resources-related studies and analysis for a multitude of environmental, land development and water resources projects
  • Conduct and lead natural resource surveys including, but not limited to, wetland delineations and functional assessments, vernal pool surveys, wildlife habitat evaluations and rare species surveys
  • Design and lead field natural resource investigations
  • Prepare natural resource study reports
  • Prepare state, federal, and local permitting applications
  • Conduct SWPPP inspections and construction compliance oversight
  • Potentially manage junior staff members
  • Organize and maintain a field and deliverable for a team of ecologists
  • Review field data, technical reports, and permit applications
  • Interact with clients and develop new work opportunities
  • Read and interpret project engineering design plans
