About The Position

The Facilities Systems Technician – Building Technology is a hands-on technical role responsible for supporting the design, implementation, commissioning, and ongoing operation of building systems across WGU facilities. The role sits at the intersection of Facilities, Construction, and IT, ensuring building infrastructure, MEP systems, and facility technology are properly designed, installed, integrated, and supported through the full project lifecycle. This is not a traditional IT helpdesk or enterprise systems role; it is a facilities-first technical role with strong IT fluency.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in facilities engineering, commercial construction, or building systems support.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with MEP coordination and building technology systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications.
  • Practical IT knowledge sufficient to understand how building systems integrate with enterprise networks (no deep server/cybersecurity expertise required).
  • Ability to work in active construction environments and occupied facilities.
  • Willingness to travel to WGU locations nationwide up to 20% of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience commissioning or supporting new facilities.
  • Working knowledge of: Electrical and low-voltage systems HVAC controls/BAS AV and collaboration systems Structured cabling and pathways
  • Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam Revu, Smartsheet, Visio, or similar.
  • Experience working directly with general contractors and specialty trades.
  • Certifications or training in electrical, low-voltage, controls, or facilities systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support planning, design review, and implementation of MEP and building technology systems in new and existing facilities.
  • Review construction drawings, submittals, and specifications related to: Electrical and low-voltage systems HVAC controls and building automation systems (BAS) Structured cabling pathways and telecommunications spaces AV, security, and lighting controls
  • Participate in field inspections, punch lists, and system commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate with general contractors, electricians, low-voltage contractors, AV integrators, and controls vendors under the guidance of Facilities leadership.
  • Support deployment and integration of: Low-voltage and structured cabling Access control, cameras, and security systems AV and collaboration technology Lighting control systems Building automation/controls interfaces
  • Verify systems are installed per design intent and operate correctly prior to turnover.
  • Serve as a technical bridge between Facilities, IT, and external vendors to ensure alignment on design intent, network integration needs, and support readiness.
  • Perform on-site and remote troubleshooting of facility technology and integrated systems.
  • Assist with lifecycle upgrades, renovations, and infrastructure refreshes.
  • Maintain clear documentation of system designs, changes, testing, and commissioning outcomes.
