About The Position

This position assists the Financial Reporting Leadership in developing and maintaining accounting systems along with recording and analyzing financial transactions and financial reporting. Performs complex accounting transactions. and follows appropriate procedures for timely and accurate preparation of reports. Responsible for assisting Financial Reporting Accountant II and I with work product and escalating significant matters to the Financial Reporting Supervisor or Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Accounting or Finance field required.
  • Experience in full financial close and U.S. GAAP accounting is required.
  • Six or more years of experience in Accounting and financial close.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage workflow and priorities both personally, and for the financial accounting team.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work well with others, both inside and outside the organization.
  • Effective problem solver, and critical thinker, with sense of urgency.
  • Must be a self-starter and possess strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.), QuickBooks, and other general ledger software applications required.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA is preferred.
  • Experience in insurance accounting preferred.
  • Experience in consolidations and affiliated transactions preferred.
  • Information technology, systems, and/or programming experience/knowledge beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a working knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (STAT) as provided by the Kentucky Department of Insurance and National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) along with US Generally Accepting Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries.
  • Prepares monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts.
  • Prepares accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and surveys.
  • Ensures financial reports are completed within time frames established.
  • Assists in the preparation of Company financial projections and maintenance of analytical models.
  • Prepares timely and accurate reports and analyses.
  • Assists in the preparation of Company budgets, projections, and other forecasts.
  • Prepares quarterly and annual filings with the DOI and NAIC, including supporting schedules and documentation to satisfy both internal and external audit requirements.
  • Develops and maintains critical thinking and analytical skills to identify abnormal trends or anomalies and assists the team with developing solutions.
  • Develops and implements accounting controls, procedures, and workflows to ensure accurate and consistent application of accounting functions.
  • Acquires and maintains a working knowledge of federal, state, & local tax accounting, including preparation and review of various tax provisions and returns.
  • Understands and develops proficient use of accounting systems and related applications.
  • Assists with audits (internal and external) by providing documentation and responding to questions and requests.
  • Assists with the implementation of new procedures and improvements to processes due to operational, legal, accounting, or regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with company-wide project work as required.
  • Assists the Financial Reporting Supervisor in training Financial Reporting Accountant positions.
  • Regular, predictable attendance as employee must physically be in the office.
  • Assist with training and mentoring team members.
  • Answer telephone inquiries courteously and efficiently.
  • Special projects as assigned.
