Foreign Language Assessment Development Manager (Part-Time/28 hours per week) At Brigham Young University’s Center for Language Studies, the Foreign Language Assessment Development Manager ensures the quality and integrity of more than 60 foreign language tests. In this role, you will oversee test development and review, collaborate with faculty and external experts, supervise student employees, and use assessment data to strengthen exam reliability and validity. Your work directly supports students’ academic progress and advances BYU’s commitment to excellence in language education.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Master’s degree in Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Education, or a closely related field
  • At least two years of experience in language assessment, curriculum development, foreign language instruction, or related project management
  • Strong knowledge of language assessment principles and proficiency frameworks, including familiarity with ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines
  • Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, or evaluating proficiency-based language assessment items
  • Ability to evaluate linguistic and cultural accuracy across diverse languages
  • Proven project management skills, with success managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and overseeing student employees and external contributors
  • Experience coordinating and managing subject matter experts to ensure assessments meet design specifications and targeted proficiency requirements
  • Strong writing, editing, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret item-level performance data to guide improvement

Nice To Haves

  • ACTFL OPI certification or other ACTFL-based credential
  • Experience developing assessments for less commonly taught languages
  • Familiarity with test administration or item development platforms such as Qualtrics or similar systems
  • Experience applying Classical Test Theory or Item Response Theory in test analysis
  • Working knowledge of psychometric tools or data analysis methods

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and maintenance of foreign language tests of more than 60 languages.
  • Ensure assessments align with recognized proficiency frameworks and reflect strong linguistic and cultural accuracy, especially in less commonly taught languages.
  • Oversee item bank management, test specifications, and quality assurance processes to maintain exam consistency and integrity.
  • Supervise and mentor student employees and external contributors, ensuring high standards and timely project completion.
  • Coordinate with faculty, subject matter experts, and external reviewers to guide exam development and pilot testing.
  • Analyze item and test performance data to inform revisions and strengthen reliability and validity.
