About The Position

The Graduate Assistant for the Learning Center works one-on-one with peers as they brainstorm, outline, draft, revise, and edit writing projects for a wide array of courses. The Graduate Assistant helps the Learning Center achieve its mission to empower students by providing holistic academic support in an inclusive environment to develop skills, strategies, and behaviors needed to be successful lifelong learners. This position is supervised by the Assistant Director of the Learning Center. Graduate assistants at Elmhurst University may be hired for a full tuition waiver based on 20 hours of service per week. Graduate assistants also receive a stipend while they are working, paid bi-weekly, in support of their continued education. Graduate assistants participate in their assistantships during the Fall and Spring terms at minimum, and may be required to participate during January and/or Summer terms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA from undergraduate studies and maintenance of a 3.0 GPA during assistantship.
  • Excellent writing skills and a working knowledge of the writing process.
  • Familiarity with locating and citing credible sources.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills and a desire to help others develop as writers.
  • A growth mindset, a commitment to inclusion, and a dependable demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Works with graduate students from a variety of courses at all stages of the writing process.
  • Uses question-asking strategies to help peers interpret assignment prompts and rubrics, develop and draft their own ideas, and engage in global revision and sentence-level editing.
  • Collaborates with the Learning Center team to develop, market, deliver, and assess evidence-based skills programming, such as graduate writing workshops, graduate writing groups, and GRE study groups.
  • Maintains accurate records of appointments and services.
  • Participates in ongoing in-person and online professional development throughout the term.
  • Instructs students in the use of the online scheduling system, My Tutoring.
  • Promotes the Learning Center with peers and through occasional classroom visits.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Supports the University’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
