About The Position

The Health Center Coordinator is responsible for supervising the Health Center staff. This includes regularly scheduled nursing, secretarial and contract staff. Coordinating with Student Life and educational supervisors around campus as well as working with off campus medical services are key components. Develop Student Health plans. The HCC is also expected to be actively involved in the school mental health team and the NMSD Wellness Committee as well as other related committees and related duties. It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing or related area in health education.
  • Three to five years of increasingly responsible leadership experience related to administration of student health services.
  • Recent successful experience as a health care provider in an educational setting; demonstrated progressively responsible and successful experience in health education and health promotion activities; demonstrated successful experience in the supervision of health care professionals; demonstrated commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals, and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid, current New Mexico license as a certified nurse practitioner and be licensed by the NM Public Education Department or the ability to obtain such licensure.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and the general public.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn American Sign Language required.
  • Writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs.
  • Must be organized and detail-oriented.
  • collects and aggregates data for program maintenance and improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the medical service providers and the school consulting pharmacist to develop protocols for the administration of all medications, including over the counter medications, which are compliant with all state and local status.
  • Working with the medical service providers to develop protocols for management of basic first aid, screenings, immunizations and other nursing duties.
  • Coordinate and/or support school wide student health and wellness services encompassing relevant areas such as student life, Food Services, athletics, instructional and residential departments.
  • Work with outside agencies such as the Santa Fe Indian Hospital, NM Department of Health, Vaccines for children, Area Dentists, Children’s Medical Services, UNM and others to coordinated necessary medical services as needed.
  • Develop Student Health Plans and other relevant components of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) including but not limited to service time, medication, and vision information as necessary.
  • Facilitate and ensure compliance to IEPs.
  • Direct nursing care of NMSD students.
  • Work as a member of a multidisciplinary evaluation team.
  • Supervise Health Center staff.
  • Coordinate nursing coverage for special events including sports and the Summer Program.
