About The Position

The High School Band Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the school’s instrumental music program. This includes concert band, marching band, and other ensembles as assigned. The Band Director provides high-quality music instruction, fosters student musicianship and performance skills, and promotes a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports student growth and participation in the performing arts.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates strong conducting and rehearsal techniques and knowledge of instrumental pedagogy and music literature.
  • Possesses the ability to motivate and inspire student musicians while managing large groups effectively.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational and time management skills along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge needed to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and to speak effectively with students and/or employees in a school environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state education laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques.
  • Strong skills in classroom management, collaboration, and differentiated instruction.
  • Strong communication skills with students, staff, administration, and the public.
  • Understanding a child’s behavior and dynamics.
  • Skilled in problem solving and patience.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to fulfill the dexterity and physical requirements of the work and effectively attend to students.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Application of percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations is required.
  • South Carolina certification in Music Education-Instrumental.
  • Experience with high school aged students.
  • Experience with differentiated instruction and data-driven teaching practices.
  • Familiar with educational technology tools.
  • Strong classroom management skills and a growth-oriented mindset.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings.
  • Requires after-school practices, events, and weekend events.
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results must be provided.

  • Strong financial skills, procurement training, and managing a budget, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and delivers engaging daily instruction in instrumental music aligned with district and state standards.
  • Directs and conducts school band ensembles including concert band, marching band, and/or other ensembles assigned.
  • Develops students’ musical skills including tone production, rhythm, technique, music theory, and ensemble performance.
  • Selects appropriate repertoire that challenges students and supports musical growth.
  • Assesses and evaluates student progress through performances, rehearsals, and formal assessments.
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts concerts, performances, competitions, parades, and community events.
  • Coordinates marching band rehearsals, halftime shows, and performances at athletic events.
  • Prepares students for regional, state, and honor band auditions and festivals.
  • Organizes and supervises after-school rehearsals and performances as required.
  • Maintains inventory and care of instruments, uniforms, music library, and equipment.
  • Prepares and manages the band program budget and provides detailed reports to school administration.
  • Coordinates instrument repairs and maintenance.
  • Maintains accurate records of student participation, attendance, and grades .
  • Fosters discipline, teamwork, and responsibility through participation in the band program.
  • Encourages student leadership through section leaders and student officers.
  • Provides mentorship and guidance to students interested in pursuing music beyond high school.
  • Communicates regularly with students, parents, administrators, and staff regarding band activities and expectations.
  • Manages and facilitates organizational meetings (i.e. Band Booster Club)
  • Collaborate with other music educators and faculty to support school-wide events and programs.
  • Recruits and retains students for the band program through outreach and collaboration with middle school programs.
  • Ensure student safety during rehearsals, performances, travel, and events.
  • Supervises students during practices, trips, and competitions.
  • Follows district policies and procedures related to student conduct, safety, and program management.
