About The Position

The City of Olathe provides interns an opportunity to experience what it’s like working in public service and helps them prepare for a future in their chosen career. Interns gain valuable skills in a real-world experience outside the classroom, and the City mentors students in their career development. Lab interns can become an integral part of the Olathe Environmental Laboratory team. You will have the opportunities for training on routine laboratory functions such as field sampling protocols, sample receipt and the laboratory information management system (LIMS) as well as analytical methods that measure parameters such as Total Chlorine Residual, Turbidity, and Total Coliform. With assistance from the Environmental Laboratory staff, this skill set may then be applied to a Geoscience project of your interest. With consideration for your school and extracurricular activity schedule, you are expected to coordinate with the Laboratory Supervisor to establish a work schedule that can be generally kept to. You are expected to follow all Lab safety protocols following the Lab safety orientation. Our previous lab interns have enjoyed a fun, team atmosphere and have gained valuable experience. The Olathe Environmental Laboratory is a full-scale water and wastewater Laboratory accredited by the State of Kansas. Primarily tasked with supporting Olathe Water and Wastewater operations, the Lab also works with Olathe residents and outside utilities to provide testing services. The Lab Intern assists in a variety of duties in the Water and Wastewater Laboratory and coordinates with Laboratory Staff to develop a Geoscience project.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years old, with a preference for those who are over 18 years old.
  • Good computer skills required.
  • Must be a high school student enrolled in a Geosciences Academy.

Nice To Haves

  • A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Documents and records data and observations
  • Logs samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database.
  • Calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots field equipment as needed
  • Prepares sample bottles and coolers for sample collection
  • Assists in collection of water and wastewater samples.
  • Collaborates with other team members and supervisor within the laboratory setting.
  • Conducts water and wastewater testing.
  • Performs other laboratory related support activities such as scanning and data entry.
