Position Summary: The Histology Technician is responsible for processing all tissues submitted to the department, preparing/staining tissue slides and assuring they are available in a timely manner for pathologist review and interpretation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned. MOHS responsibility: Specimen processing Freezing tissue and cutting and staining with a cryostat Placing tissue on slides Labeling and storage of slides Preparation and mixing of solutions used in MOHS lab Use and handling of all materials and reagents Following hazardous waste guidelines and OSHA safety regulations Maintaining, updating and recording daily temperatures of all equipment and quality control records per CLIA Guidelines Ensuring a safe environment in the lab according to OSHA standards (i.e. safety glasses, gloves, etc.) Conforms to all applicable HIPAA, and Billing compliance and safety guidelines Histology Lab/ Histo Tech responsibility: Accessioning the tissue which includes entering the information into the computer under the patient name. CLIA credentialed gross technicians and perform grossing. Processing and embedding tissues. Cutting the tissues on a microtome and mounting on slides for staining. H&E stains using an automated stainer. Performing manual histochemical stains. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining using an automated stainer. Daily maintenance of all equipment. Routine filing of slides and blocks. Education Requirements Bachelor of Science in science related field is required.
