A Histotech in the anatomical pathology department prepares specimens and performs testing procedures on surgical and cytology specimens that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations for diagnosis by the pathologist. This position may also be responsible for the gross examination of uncomplicated specimens and may participate in postmortem examinations.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's or associate's degree in histological or science related discipline
  • Experience: Prior Histotech experience preferred.
  • Licensure: Completion of a histological technician certificate program recognized by New York State (NYS) for licensure exam eligibility. NYS Certified Histological Technician license (or eligible).

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for prompt and accurate embedding, cutting, staining, and coverslipping of anatomic pathology specimens.
  • Process specimens for immunohistochemical (IHC) stains, special stains, and send out testing as requested by the pathologist.
  • Prepare frozen section slides and/or touch preparations for intraoperative consultation.
  • Responsible for accurate specimen identification, accessioning and requisitioning - maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation - properly prepare solutions and reagents for staining instrumentation.
  • Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, New York State and Joint Commission regulations, HIPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines.
  • Perform gross examination of surgical specimens - CPT 88300-88305 plus placentas (88307)
  • Maintain slide, block and specimen retention systems according to department specimen management policies.
  • Maintain and monitor inventory.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities - acquire a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education per year.
  • Participate in postmortem examinations.
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
