About The Position

The Human Resources/Claims Manager serves as a strategic business partner and operational leader, overseeing all aspects of human resources, employee relations, and injury claims administration for a multi-department ferry service operation. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and maritime regulations while supporting safe, efficient fleet operations and a positive employee experience. The HR/Claims Manager collaborates closely with corporate offices, legal counsel, insurance partners, and local leadership to manage personnel administration, injury claims, payroll coordination, and workplace initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • HR management experience in transportation, maritime, or regulated environments strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of employment law, payroll systems, HRIS platforms, and claims administration.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Notary Public commission in the state of New York within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to operate a computer terminal, telephones, and standard office equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all human resources operations, including employee records, HRIS data integrity, onboarding and offboarding, personnel file management, and compliance with federal, state, and maritime labor laws.
  • Partner with leadership to manage employee relations, performance management, workplace investigations, and conflict resolution.
  • Oversee payroll timekeeping for non-exempt employees, attendance tracking, and leave administration for all employees across departments.
  • Administer employee benefits programs, including enrollment, education, and maintenance of accurate documentation for insurance and retirement plans.
  • Manage employee injury, Jones Act, and operational claims in coordination with Corporate Insurance, Benefits, and outside legal counsel, including reporting, investigations, and settlement support.
  • Serve as a key liaison between Operations, Maintenance, Accounting, Reservations, Legal, Insurance, and Corporate Offices to support efficient and compliant business operations.
  • Support the General Manager and leadership team with administrative, compliance, and operational initiatives, including oversight of custodial staff.
  • Partner with Operations and Marine Personnel leadership to manage full-cycle hiring, from background checks through first-day readiness.
  • Plan and coordinate employee engagement initiatives, training programs, and company events in collaboration with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Serve as an authorized signer on designated special accounts and support audits, reporting, and other corporate administrative requirements.
  • Perform notarial acts in compliance with state laws and company policies.
