About The Position

Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) is seeking an experienced Human Resources Specialist to support the day-to-day operations of its Human Resources team. MAP is a unionized organization with approximately 250 full-time employees located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Reporting to the HR Manager, the Human Resources Specialist will bring strong expertise in benefits administration, employee recruitment and retention, onboarding, and employee relations. This position will play an important role in supporting key HR functions, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and organizational policies, and partnering with the HR team to enhance the overall employee experience. MAP offers a hybrid work environment, including some flexibility for remote work. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP)’s mission is to advance the safety, independence, and economic stability of those most affected by poverty, racism, and other structurally oppressive systems by increasing access to justice and working for systemic solutions. MAP’s direct services components are: 1) Legal Services of South Central Michigan, which provides free civil legal advice and representation to low-income residents of 13 counties in south central Michigan and 2) Farmworker Legal Services, which provides free legal assistance to migrant and seasonal farmworkers throughout the State of Michigan. MAP also provides administrative services to the five statewide programs of Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services, including the Michigan Poverty Law Program, Michigan Legal Help, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, the Michigan Elder Justice Initiative, and the Crime Victims Legal Assistance Project.

Requirements

  • The Human Resources Specialist will possess a college degree in Human Resources or a related field, or equivalent work experience

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and monitor MAP’s recruitment, hiring, and retention practices to advance diversity and inclusion across the organization
  • Work with the HR manager in researching and identifying opportunities to promote open positions and recruit qualified candidates, including coordinating MAP’s participation in career fair
  • Draft and post job announcements and maintain current application materials
  • Coordinate hiring processes, including tracking applications and supporting hiring committees throughout the selection process
  • Draft employment contracts for review
  • Coordinate onboarding for new employees to support a smooth and effective transition into the organization
  • Create and maintain personnel files and ensure accurate recordkeeping in the HRIS
  • Assist managers to support compliance with staff evaluation requirement
  • Assist with monitoring compliance related to staff timesheets, leave usage, benefits enrollment, and other HR function
  • Assist with tracking and and recognizing staff anniversaries, program awards, and other employee recognition initiatives.

Benefits

  • Starting salary is from $68,080 depending on experience.

  • If an applicant does not require health benefits, they have the option to take an annual $1,500 payout in addition to the base salary paid over the course of the year.
