Requirements

Knowledge of: Engineering tools to perform field inspections of worksites for compliance to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) roadway standards
Skills in: Communicating technical information verbally and in writing, Understanding and interpreting plans, specifications, design standards and manuals, Dealing with internal and external customers in a courteous manner, Remaining calm and effective under pressure, Working effectively as a team member, Following oral and written instructions, Use of personal computer (PC) and understanding of databases, Organizing records and handling multiple tasks and interruptions
Ability to: Enter and retrieve information from a computer database, Lift 50 pounds and stoop, climb, squat, push, crawl and bend.
High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency, Class E Driver License, and 12 months of infrastructure design, construction, or maintenance experience; or an Associate Degree or higher.
This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

Analyze complex plans and perform independent complex technical assignments to accomplish inspection and monitoring of work activities performed within the state Right of Way. Verify that work is performed according to all State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes, rules. Performs approved testing techniques using hand tools, gauges and/or instruments to ensure materials used conform to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) requirements. Use various engineering tools, equipment, Instruments, and computers for performing technical engineering tasks, problem solving and record keeping. Provide information to consulting engineers, developers, architects, and permit applicants as needed. Prepares all documentation in order to validate payments to roadway contractors.
Perform interpretation of documents related to authorized Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) device usage, installation/placement, and materials to ensure safe work zones. Reviews work site activities for conformity to safety regulations and takes corrective measures when deficiencies are noted.
Conducts surveys of signs, guardrail, and attenuators as required by procedures. Provides survey of roadway items to be inventoried for Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI). Fills out data coding sheet and enters roadway data into computer data base as needed. Gathers data and performs preliminary reviews for maintenance contract needs. Assists in the preparation of maintenance contracts. Prepares specifications as needed for use in maintenance contracts.
Conducts/attends pre-work conferences on maintenance contracts and attends/conducts meetings with contractors/utility owners/permitees throughout life of projects as assigned. Acts as a representative of the Department on all issues related to contracts and permits. Issues work documents on contracts as directed. Prepares and issues work documents on contracts as needed.
Performs plans reviews for constructability and adherence to Department standards and specifications. Provides comments on Department policies and procedures as requested.
