About The Position

Join a high-performing, tight-knit team at SmartSense, a fast-growing company that leverages the Internet of Things (IoT) to transform how organizations sense, monitor, and make decisions. Founded out of MIT in 2005, SmartSense is trusted by Walmart, SpaceX, Apple, CVS Health, Coca-Cola, and many others to enable sensor-driven decision-making in mission-critical environments. This is an exciting opportunity for an electrical or computer engineering student to apply their knowledge in a commercial IoT hardware setting. You will gain hands-on experience in sustaining and new product introduction (NPI) efforts, collaborating with seasoned engineers to improve and develop cutting-edge sensor-based solutions.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes (injection molding, machining, sheet metal, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with CAD tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or similar).
  • Familiarity with tolerance stack-up, basic thermal considerations, and structural design concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC).
  • Familiarity with environmental standards (IP rating, UL, CE considerations).
  • Exposure to product testing methods (thermal chambers, vibration tables, etc.) Understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, prototyping, and validation of mechanical enclosures and components for IoT sensor systems.
  • Support sustaining engineering efforts by identifying and resolving mechanical and environmental reliability issues in existing products.
  • Contribute to NPI efforts, including enclosure development, material selection, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Participate in mechanical testing such as environmental, thermal, vibration, and drop testing to ensure product durability and compliance.
  • Work closely with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless product integration and production readiness.
  • Support documentation including CAD models, engineering drawings, BOM updates, ECOs, and test reports.
