Job Description: The Laboratory Logistics Coordinator provides training and oversight for the tracking, handling, receiving, and directing of all specimens for laboratory testing for the HMS and Molecular laboratories. This position will also provide oversight for send-out kit distribution for all clinics within Tennessee Oncology and will work closely with internal and external laboratory departments and IT to ensure all tests are reported in a timely manner. This position will work with technical staff on issues regarding blood or bone marrow testing sent to the reference/external labs not currently managed by the Outreach staff.

Requirements

  • Strong customer service skills and experience
  • Strong experience in laboratory operation and specimen workflows
  • Strong attention to details and documentation requirements
  • Understanding of LIS; including ordering test, rejecting test, reviewing and reporting internal and external results
  • High School diploma required. AAS, MLT also acceptable.
  • A minimum of 3 years of extensive experience working in a laboratory setting and/or accessioning and handling biohazardous specimens.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all training and oversight for the receipt, distribution and accessioning of samples received in the laboratory at HMS for internal and external reference testing.
  • Supports the departments of the HMS and Molecular labs with sample receipt and/or ordering.
  • Follows proper guidelines for safe handling of blood, body fluids and hazardous chemicals.
  • Adheres to CLIA compliance requirements.
  • Responsible for all specimen tracking, distribution, storage, and destruction as defined by the laboratory policies.
  • Ensure the HMS lab assistants are trained and have full knowledge of sample receipt, handling, distribution, send-out ordering, results tracking and proper destruction of biohazard specimens.
  • Works with the Director of Laboratory Operations to oversee the HMS lab assistant staff though scheduling, work assignments, and duties.
  • Monitors the handling and distribution of samples through all processes within the pathology and molecular lab.
  • Interacts with medical staff and assists with questions regarding tests that are referred for testing through the HMS lab or referred to external labs approved by Tennessee Oncology.
  • Required to provide support as needed by the HMS lab assistants to handle the case load and reports data/issues to applicable manager/director.
  • Provide suggestions when applicable for work improvements and problem resolutions.
