About The Position

Under general supervision, perform and supervise a variety of responsible paraprofessional library tasks in departmental areas. May plan and execute programs for the adult demographic (over age of 18). Assist patrons with reference questions, registering for library cards, using automated systems, answering account-related questions, and solving problems for library customers in a friendly and efficient way. Work collaboratively with library staff to facilitate flow of items and usage of library spaces.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of library policies, procedures, systems, and services including the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Bibliographic database and related search procedures.
  • Working knowledge of library collections (circulation, reference, special collections).
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite applications.
  • Electronic equipment including computers, scanners, copiers, printers, and other library technologies.
  • Effective internet search techniques and online research strategies.
  • Basic principles of customer service and public engagement within a library environment.
  • Skill to accurately and efficiently operate computer and library-related software systems.
  • Plan effective programs and produce creative materials to use in programming.
  • Present and apply a dedicated commitment to public service.
  • Work with diverse individuals of all ages.
  • Adapt to changing circumstances and situations.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Apply problem-solving skills to assist patrons and resolve issues effectively.
  • Safely operate a personal or City vehicle.

  • Learn and apply money collection procedures.
  • Clearly and concisely communicate library policies and information, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid Texas driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends and maintain regular reliable attendance.
  • Ability to push or transport a loaded cart weighing up to 150 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of experience in a public library is preferred.
  • One (1) year of customer service experience is preferred.
  • An associate’s degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Under departmental supervision, develop and conduct informative and entertaining programs for adults.
  • Assists in circulation functions including registering patrons, checking out and discharging material, taking payments, assisting patrons with directional and “ready reference” information, and locating and utilizing requested materials.
  • Assist patrons in areas such as explaining policies and procedures, assisting in programs using library facilities, assisting in research in a variety of areas, and the use of library equipment.
  • Accurately enters and updates patron and library material information in the library database.
  • Shelves materials, reads shelves, and creates displays to assist in maintaining a neat and orderly library collection.
  • Provides Readers Advisory service to library patrons and staff.
  • Monitor work-related equipment including scanners, PCs, Xerox, and other technology related items utilized in library operations. Also monitors and orders supplies and replacement parts as necessary.
  • Assists the public in the use of the library’s online catalog and digital resources.
  • Provides hands-on assistance to patrons with computer use, printing, and photocopying.
  • Operate a personal or city vehicle.
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
