About The Position

Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee, Illinois, is seeking a skilled and compassionate Labor and Delivery License Pending Registered Nurse (RN) to join our acute care team. The ideal candidate will provide exceptional patient care to expectant mothers and their newborns in a fast-paced and supportive environment. As a License Pending Labor and Delivery RN, you will work closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and positive childbirth experiences, managing both routine deliveries and emergency situations with competence and empathy. Additionally, this position requires flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Must provide documentation of passing NCLEX-RN exam and licensure in-process to prior to start date.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certification Required (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
  • New Graduate RNs starting on or after 1/1/25 must earn Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 3 years of start date.
  • The privilege to practice as a license-pending registered nurse will be aligned with the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and shall be terminated with the occurrence of any of the following: Three months have passed since the official date of passing the licensure exam as inscribed on the formal written notification indicating passage of the exam. The 3-month license pending period may be extended if more time is needed by the Department to process the licensure application.
  • Receipt of the registered professional nurse license from the Department.
  • Notification from the Department that the application for licensure has been refused.
  • A request by the Department that the individual terminate practicing as a license-pending registered nurse until an official decision is made by the Department to grant or deny a registered professional nurse license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to women before, during, and after labor, including monitoring maternal and fetal vital signs, administering medications, and assisting with epidurals.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients.
  • Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families throughout the labor process.
  • Monitor labor progression using fetal monitoring devices, and respond to any abnormalities or emergencies as necessary.
  • Assist in all aspects of labor, including preparing patients for delivery, guiding mothers through labor, and coaching during pushing.
  • Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections (C-sections), including prepping the delivery room and ensuring sterile environments.
  • Provide immediate newborn care, including resuscitation and APGAR scoring, as needed.
  • Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including administering medications, monitoring recovery, and facilitating skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding support.
  • Educate patients and families about postpartum care, newborn care, and any discharge instructions.
  • Respond to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, hemorrhage, and fetal distress with quick thinking and effective interventions.
  • Participate in Code OB, Code Blue, or other emergency protocols as necessary.
  • Team member will maintain annual education requirements
  • Participate in departmental meetings and continuing education opportunities.
  • Assist with maintaining cleanliness and inventory in the labor and delivery unit.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to nursing students or newly hired RNs as needed.
  • Participate in hospital initiatives, quality improvement projects, and community outreach programs.
