About The Position

The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a licensed veterinary technician to join our team at Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists located in Elmont, NY. In this fast-paced, collaborative environment, the technician will play a key role in supporting equine patient care across multiple services, including surgery, anesthesia, and diagnostic imaging, while working closely with clinicians, veterinary students, and technicians to deliver outstanding care. This LVT will support a variety of functions in the hospital. The Core responsibilities include but are not limited to: Patient Care & Case Flow: Receive and discharge equine patients, coordinate daily patient flow, assist with exams and emergencies, administer medications, perform inpatient monitoring, and provide pre- and post-procedure nursing care. Surgical & Anesthesia Support: Assist with the preparation and execution of surgical procedures, including patient preparation, anesthesia induction and monitoring, circulating during procedures, recovery, and maintaining sterile technique and surgical equipment. Diagnostic Imaging: Perform and assist with imaging procedures including radiography, standing MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, CT, and ultrasound and safely prepare and position patients while maintaining radiation safety standards. Clinical Operations & Support: Maintain clinical equipment and supplies, perform routine laboratory testing, manage case records and inventories, support DVM students and externs, assist with research sample handling, and participate in rotating after-hours emergency coverage. Employees working in the hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department. Important Details about the Position This is an onsite position located in Elmont, NY. This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance. We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position. While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks. Requirements

  • Associates degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA accredited institution, plus New York State licensure (or eligible to be licensed) with at least 1 year experience or equivalent
  • Experience working with equine animals
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a variety of stakeholders in the hospital including other students, clients, and clinicians
  • Must be able to work in an often fast-paced and demanding environment, while paying close attention to details
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, remain organized, and maintain accuracy while managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical setting
  • Willingness and ability to contribute to the education of others through mentorship and teaching
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, which include, but not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, lifting and restraining animals that may exceed 50 pounds
  • May also be required to jog horses as needed for lameness exams
