About The Position

Provides technical support to the production departments with regard to the fabricating and/or modifying components utilized in new or existing production equipment, testing fixtures, and developmental tools, fixtures or machines.. Diagnose problems with existing and new components, recommend corrective actions to assure trouble-free operations. Performs layout, and set-up, programming of automatic machines, operating and making tool adjustments for a variety of major conventional machine shop equipment. Works from blueprints, process sheets and sketches to perform production tasks which may include cutting, or shaping of metals to precision dimensions. Checks and inspects machining operations against specified tolerances. May identify and repair minor machine malfunctions. The Machinist II is responsible for determining how best to complete assigned tasks within the designated time frames. Work may need to be coordinated with individuals within Engineering and as well as other departments. Emergency repairs and requests are completed or delegated to other associates expeditiously to maintain uninterrupted production operations. Provides training and guidance as needed to Associate Machinists and Machinist I associates especially when they are working on more complex and non-routine machining and tooling components. Additional responsibilities may include, but are not limited to training and supervision of other machinists, assisting/overseeing other TMC associates using shop equipment, scheduling and directing resources to perform emergency repairs, providing input on design reviews and work requests as needed, specifying and procurement of tooling and materials required to complete work requests.

Requirements

  • Ability to read blue and interpret blueprints, excellent visual acuity.
  • Ability to make decisions and act on the decisions based on the knowledge and experience gained in the field of machining and fabricating.
  • Ability to provide guidance to less senior Machinists. Ability to independently plan sequencing of machining/tooling operations.
  • Computer skills including proficiency with CAD/CAM software utilized by TMC in order to program CNC equipment.
  • Ability to independently machine and tool complex and detailed parts such as required by high speed automated equipment. Ability to work to close tolerances as small as ± .0001 inch.
  • Ability to set up and run all machines within the shop to include specialized machinery.
  • Work requires exacting visual and mental attention to the job being performed to ensure accuracy and is performed standing continuously with some walking between machines.
  • Successful completion of trade school or a four-year machinist apprenticeship program followed by a minimum of 10 years machining experience preferred, using a wide variety of machine shop equipment (lathes, mills, computerized numerical control computer (CNC), etc.

Responsibilities

  • Associate is responsible to follow requirements of TMC Quality System; including but not limited to: process controls, calibration and maintenance procedures, document/data control, and change control practices.
  • Read and interpret and follow drawings of components and/or parts to be made.
  • Schedule sequence of operations required, procure appropriate tooling, materials or equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Utilize any/all appropriate measuring equipment to inspect finished parts and complete appropriate documentation to certify that parts meet all specifications required.
  • Design, if necessary, and fabricate special jigs, fixtures, work holding devices or tooling necessary to utilize equipment available in the most efficient manner to complete assigned tasks.
  • Operate and demonstrate proficiency with all milling, lathe, grinding and auxiliary machines and tools available in the Mold/Machine Fabrication Shop.
  • Program and operate any/all CNC machinery necessary to complete assigned tasks.
  • Maintain shop equipment in good working order and perform repairs if necessary.
  • Maintain personal and public shop areas in a neat and clutter-free condition.
  • Assist other shop associates and provide guidance to less senior Machinists.
  • Provide input to the Machine Designer on CNC Programming requirements.
  • Perform welding operations when necessary and appropriate.
  • Participates in project performance team meetings on behalf of the job unit in order to provide ideas, methods, or processes for unit/company performance improvement.
  • Performs other job-related duties assigned.
