About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! The Maintenance/Construction Technician III supports regional facility operations for the Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance by performing journey-level maintenance and construction across multiple trades to maintain and repair building systems and equipment at the Western Correctional Center for Women and other Mountain Region sites. The role completes preventive maintenance, generator service and repair, and like‑in‑kind force account replacements, working with limited oversight to plan and coordinate multi‑trade tasks and ensure code‑compliant, reliable facility performance. The Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) coordinates all North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) construction and renovation efforts, working closely with the State Construction Office to bring projects to life. We represent the department on key property and building matters while keeping facilities running smoothly through expert support for mechanical, electrical, kitchen, and other essential systems. With a dedicated team specializing in design, project management, and sustainability, DECM helps ensure our facilities stay safe, efficient, and ready to serve.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas OR An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more journeyman level construction trade skills within concrete, masonry, carpentry, site work, painting, finishes, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and/or equipment operation.
  • Demonstrated experience in the installation of primary and secondary electrical conduit and circuitry for electrical distribution systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with standard testing equipment to diagnose electrical components.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC).

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on facility systems and equipment—such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or generators—following established standards and work orders.
  • Service, repair, and test standby generators and related components; document results and schedule follow‑up work. Install and replace like‑in‑kind components and systems through force account projects; coordinate materials and sequencing across trades.
  • Diagnose electrical distribution issues; install primary or secondary conduit and circuitry; ensure work aligns with the National Electrical Code and agency standards.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to plan work and verify as‑built conditions.
  • Provide technical guidance to skilled, semiskilled, or unskilled workers during multi‑trade maintenance assignments; escalate unusual problems to a supervisor as needed.
  • Travel within the Mountain Region to support site needs and coordinate activities with facility maintenance and DECM staff.
