About The Position

Position performs skilled work and specializes in at least one trade in connection with the maintenance, repair and/or construction of buildings and facilities, and associated systems. Position functions at the journey to advanced level in skilled trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC. At least one relevant license is preferred. Work assignments are moderately complex in nature and vary widely depending on the current needs of the Division. Examples of common assignments include, but are not limited to, siding and roofing repairs, flooring installation, exterior and interior lighting, ferry ramp electrical issue troubleshooting and repair, concrete work, lock/door handle replacement, HVAC troubleshooting and repair, plumbing repairs, and design and construction of basic structures. Position is expected to work independently on diverse projects and to possess basic organizational, planning, and administrative skills needed to manage projects appropriately. Position requires frequent travel as the service area includes the Manns Harbor Shipyard, Currituck-Knotts Island Ferry, Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry, Swan Quarter Ferry, and Pamlico River Ferry. Overnight travel is not regular but may be necessary for certain projects. This position is regularly given responsibly for special projects and assignments directed by higher level supervisors and works directly for the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of buildings.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in the maintenance and repair of heating & cooling systems.
  • Experience pricing proposed work, developing materials list and completing work within established budgets.
  • Knowledge and awareness of safety hazards and methods of preventing accidents.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
