The Maintenance Lead plays a dynamic role in supporting the upkeep and durability of the Tallac Historic Site and Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located in South Lake Tahoe, CA. The seasonal position works with the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Great Basin Institute to collaboratively maintain and improve facilities, coordinate volunteers, support visitor safety and engagement, and maintain trails/grounds. The Tallac Historic Site (THS) and Taylor Creek Visitor Center (TCVC) are co-managed by the LTBMU and GBI, the agency's interpretive association, and are part of GBI’s CORE sites. The Maintenance Lead oversees facilities upkeep, in coordination with the LTMBU and GBI leadership. The position performs groundskeeping work including winterization, water systems management, brush/slash and other fuels removal, trail maintenance, as well as lawn care. In addition, basic building maintenance (repairs, basic electrical, painting, staining, pest control, etc.) is accomplished under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Lead. Both THS and TCVC are stewarded by volunteers, and the Maintenance Lead will oversee a volunteer maintenance crew as well as the USFS tool room and shop. Approximately 70% of time will be spent at THS and 30% at TCVC. Additional duties may include equipment and supply inventory, travel between USFS sites, special event support, project-based work, and record keeping. A Temporary Special Assignment (TSA) employee is one who is hired for a specific temporary assignment external from the institute’s administrative operations with one of GBI’s partners for 52 weeks or greater or less than 52 weeks and may work full-time (30 or more hours per week) or part-time (less than 30 hours per week).
