About The Position

The Maintenance Lead plays a dynamic role in supporting the upkeep and durability of the Tallac Historic Site and Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located in South Lake Tahoe, CA. The seasonal position works with the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Great Basin Institute to collaboratively maintain and improve facilities, coordinate volunteers, support visitor safety and engagement, and maintain trails/grounds. The Tallac Historic Site (THS) and Taylor Creek Visitor Center (TCVC) are co-managed by the LTBMU and GBI, the agency's interpretive association, and are part of GBI’s CORE sites. The Maintenance Lead oversees facilities upkeep, in coordination with the LTMBU and GBI leadership. The position performs groundskeeping work including winterization, water systems management, brush/slash and other fuels removal, trail maintenance, as well as lawn care. In addition, basic building maintenance (repairs, basic electrical, painting, staining, pest control, etc.) is accomplished under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Lead. Both THS and TCVC are stewarded by volunteers, and the Maintenance Lead will oversee a volunteer maintenance crew as well as the USFS tool room and shop. Approximately 70% of time will be spent at THS and 30% at TCVC. Additional duties may include equipment and supply inventory, travel between USFS sites, special event support, project-based work, and record keeping. A Temporary Special Assignment (TSA) employee is one who is hired for a specific temporary assignment external from the institute’s administrative operations with one of GBI’s partners for 52 weeks or greater or less than 52 weeks and may work full-time (30 or more hours per week) or part-time (less than 30 hours per week).

Requirements

  • Technical carpentry skills and ability to identify infrastructure issues and address deferred maintenance
  • Basic project management skills
  • Ability to train and manage volunteers with varying levels of facilities mgmt expertise
  • Knowledge of historic preservation standards preferred
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders and stay on track
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to delegate projects
  • Proficient problem solving skills
  • Ability to follow and update SOPs, and keep detailed maintenance records
  • Knowledge of the Lake Tahoe Basin’s multi-agency management and jurisdictions, Forest Service policies, flora and fauna, and ecosystem functions.
  • Knowledge of recreation regulations and familiarity with the Tallac Historic Site and Taylor Creek Visitor Center
  • Valid Driver’s License for duration of the position
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in recreation management or a related field, such as natural resource management, park management, engineering, or historic preservation
  • 2-4 years experience working in recreation sites, facilities, or preservation management preferred.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required as a condition of employment for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in project management or with volunteers, particularly within the Tahoe Basin are also preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Facility upkeep. Oversee the health, maintenance and durability of complex recreation buildings, including two man-made ponds, water fountains, outdoor amphitheater and 17 historic buildings. Identify and track maintenance issues that require special resources to appropriately address.
  • Project Planning & Implementation. Review resources (labor, equipment, funds) required to address maintenance projects and collaborate with partners to close any gaps.
  • Volunteer coordination. Train, monitor and oversee maintenance volunteers on project work, or while during routine maintenance tasks. Provide support and delegate tasks where appropriate.
  • Administrative. Maintain and update facility maintenance records and communicate change with all stakeholders. Attend meetings and consolidate annual accomplishment reports.
