About The Position

This role involves the design, development, and improvement of electro-mechanical automated door systems, ensuring compliance with industry and regulatory standards. The engineer manages all phases of the product lifecycle—from conceptual design and testing to troubleshooting and sustaining engineering. Responsibilities include supporting cross-functional teams (marketing, production, suppliers), conducting performance testing, managing product improvements and obsolescence, and coordinating product certifications. The position also involves technical problem-solving, prototype development, cost-reduction evaluations, and maintaining product reliability and performance. Project management tasks such as creating budgets, timelines, and scopes are also required.

Requirements

  • Work experience as designer in product manufacturing is highly desirable, preference is specifically in construction product industry.
  • High level of proficiency with SolidWorks and 2-D drafting.
  • Must be capable of operating a 3-D printer.
  • Experienced in the creation of part, assembly and production drawing through SolidWorks, this is a must as well as understand of good drawing disciplines such as tolerancing, hole call outs, and sheet metal bending.
  • Must be able to show proficiency in engineering practices specifically in statics such as beam loading, finite element analysis, and material sciences.
  • Experience with ERP such as Oracle is desirable.
  • Will be highly involved with cross functional team activities in the implementation of projects, must be able to clearly communicate ideas and work through project activities in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Strong decision making with a moderate to high level of understanding of product manufacturing.
  • Will be expected to clearly present analysis, product status, and findings to a multi-disciplinary team and field questions effectively.
  • Minimum education is a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a similar field in engineering or manufacturing technologies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel)
  • Experienced in use of hand tools and power tools for part prototyping and installation of samples.
  • Physically fit for work in field, including on ladders and lifting of materials up to 60 lbs. for product installations.
  • High degree of time management to be able to juggle tasks on projects.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Travel on occasions determined by project activity and field product support. This travel would include international travel to Horton mfg. plant in MX.
  • Driver’s License required for travel.

Responsibilities

  • Designs electro-mechanical automated door systems to industry and regulatory standards.
  • Performs a variety of engineering work in planning, design and improvement of products.
  • Defines, documents, analyzes, performs, and interprets developmental tests for new and/or modified products or product components including parts and processes from outside vendors.
  • Investigates and resolves product issues in conjunction with other engineering and technical personnel.
  • Provides technical support and advice to marketing department, distributors, architects, the production floor, and other engineering groups as needed.
  • Aids in troubleshooting and resolving existing product issues in the field and production floor
  • Manages obsolescence projects for older products or product lines
  • Designs product improvements for existing products
  • Acts as liaison with outside suppliers in establishing or modifying specifications for purchased items.
  • Devises and applies testing procedures for parts or sub-assemblies received from outside vendors.
  • Participates in the design reviews, stage gate process reviews and design for manufacture reviews.
  • Works with Product Managers to initiate the first article production and participates in the first article inspection process.
  • Research new and existing technologies for applications to our products to enhance operational performance and reliability.
  • Review new product design projects and prepares them for transition into the sustaining engineering department from a design maintenance perspective.
  • Construct prototypes of new products and ensure that their designed usage meet the product specifications.
  • Manage product testing for special applications and manage any outside vendors that may participate in the testing.
  • Perform life cycle testing on proposed cost reducing material to ensure that they meet the product specifications indicated and meet expectations.
  • Assist Product Manager in compiling technical data and information for Distributors to use for project submittals.
  • Manage, support and correct production issues when they fall within the engineering area whenever the problems arise on the production floor.
  • Create project scope, budget, timeline, etc. for each project that is assigned.
  • Liaison with internal codes and standards Engineer to obtain product approvals and certifications.
  • Redesign products for special applications or special functions.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
