About The Position

This position supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by providing excellent customer service, working collaboratively with clinical teams, and enabling the facilitation of positive patient outcomes by optimizing mobility to patients which includes walking, repositioning, and transfers in the acute inpatient medical setting.

Requirements

  • Proficient in transfer techniques
  • Proficient in all UP! Safe Patient Handling equipment
  • Will become a Certified Transfer Mobility Coach for UP! within Mercy
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent public relations and human relations; exemplifies The Mercy Touch.
  • Flexibility and dependability, works well with a variety of individuals and leadership styles
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn and use EPIC system to document mobility interventions
  • Basic Life Support certification in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required.
  • Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.

Nice To Haves

  • Rehabilitation Technician or Certified Nursing Assistant experience or in a medical training program (nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy) a bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as Mercy expert and resource on patient care ergonomics, equipment use, and safe patient handling techniques for peers
  • Performs all transfer techniques to include bed mobility, sit to stands, stand pivot transfers, slide board transfers, maxi move/Hoyer transfers, lateral transfers to and from cardiac chair, Sara Steady, Sara Lifts, Bari Lift, maxi slide/ maxi air transfers and other transfer techniques, as appropriate.
  • Understands how to utilize proper all assistive devices for patient safety and how to adjust devices as needed
  • Utilizes the appropriate equipment and method of patient transfer and mobility after consideration of the patient’s ability per MAT level assessment, weight bearing restrictions and other special circumstances
  • Knows how to reference lab values and ranges for safe mobility
  • Monitors changes/responses during exercise/mobility and communicates with medical teams with updates on mobility, skin care, or concerns
  • Checks vitals to include blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels and knows safe ranges for mobility
  • Trains other medical staff on use of transfer/UP! equipment
  • Attends monthly meetings to share best practices and review of processes for area of work for continual improvement with fellow Mobility Technicians and Safe Patient Handling Coordinator
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
