Summary: The Mortgage Underwriting Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining high‑quality training programs that strengthen the technical expertise, analytical capability, and regulatory understanding of mortgage underwriters. This role collaborates closely with underwriting leadership, quality assurance, and learning teams to ensure training content reflects current agency guidelines, internal policies, and industry best practices. The position includes opportunities to travel internationally to support global training operations. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Training Development & Delivery Design and facilitate training programs covering conventional mortgage underwriting, credit analysis, collateral review, regulatory requirements, and internal processes. Deliver live virtual, in‑person, and asynchronous training sessions for new and experienced underwriters. Create structured curricula, job aids, case studies, scenario‑based training, and assessments. Adapt training content and delivery methods based on learner performance, feedback, and evolving business needs. Curriculum & Content Management Maintain up‑to‑date training materials aligned with agency guidelines, investor requirements, and company policy updates. Partner with subject matter experts to refine and enhance existing content. Support the development of learning paths and certification programs for underwriter skill progression. Performance Evaluation & Coaching Assess learner progress using knowledge checks, file reviews, QA findings, and performance metrics. Provide individual coaching to build underwriting judgment, risk assessment skills, and guideline interpretation. Partner with leaders to provide recommendations on learner readiness and ongoing development needs. Cross‑Functional Collaboration Work closely with underwriting leadership to identify training gaps and emerging needs. Collaborate with Quality Control/Quality Assurance teams to integrate findings into training programs. Align with Learning & Development teams on best practices for instructional design and content strategy. Travel Requirements Travel internationally to India, the Philippines, and additional global locations as needed to deliver training, support offshore underwriting teams, and collaborate with global partners. Represent the training function professionally across diverse cultural and operational environments. Process and Program Improvement Continuously evaluate and refine training programs to enhance learner engagement, operational efficiency, and overall training effectiveness. Leverage innovative instructional methods such as simulations, blended learning, and peer‑based learning opportunities. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a Four (4) year College or University.
  • 5+ years of hands‑on conventional mortgage underwriting experience.
  • Deep understanding of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex loan scenarios and make sound credit decisions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, digestible training content.
  • Prior experience training, coaching, or mentoring underwriters.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures and functions.
  • Expertise in mortgage underwriting, risk assessment, and guideline interpretation.
  • Proficiency with LOS platforms, DU/LP, and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Strong presentation design skills (PowerPoint, visual storytelling, structured instructional flow).
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, including software used for eLearning development (e.g., Articulate 360, Rise, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia or similar).
  • Ability to build digital learning content such as videos, self‑paced modules, and interactive exercises.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking ability.

  • Adaptability, creativity, and problem‑solving.

Nice To Haves

  • Underwriting knowledge or certifications in FHA, VA, USDA, or other government‑backed programs.
  • Experience with Non‑Agency or Non‑QM products.
  • Background in instructional design, adult learning theory, or Learning & Development.
  • Familiarity with LMS platforms or eLearning development tools.
