Position Summary The Music Teacher is responsible for instructing elementary students in the fundamentals of music, fostering a love for music, and developing their musical skills. This role involves creating and implementing engaging lesson plans, teaching students to play instruments or sing, and organizing performances. The elementary music teacher collaborates with colleagues and seeks to integrate music into the overall curriculum. The teacher also contributes to a positive and inclusive learning environment and stays current with trends in music education.  This role will also be responsible for the development of the school band.

Requirements

  • At least an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university, and meet the requirements and expectations set in Act 99
  • A passion for music, strong communication skills, and the ability to inspire and engage young learners
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Proficient in office software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies
  • The ability to keep concise records and handle sensitive information with discretion
  • The ability to work with a diversity of individuals and groups
  • The ability to adapt to changing work priorities and maintain flexible working hours

Nice To Haves

  • Concentration in music education or a related field strongly preferred
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certification strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Create an environment that is conducive to learning and enhances students’ educational experience
  • Plan and deliver vibrant, engaging, and creative lessons using curriculum and materials that are aligned with Louisiana Standards and the National Standards for Music Education
  • Guide students in the various forms of music acquisition and expansion of students’ knowledge of the various forms of music
  • Teach skills in music understanding/appreciation, harmony, explorations in music and choral music to elementary pupils
  • Plan/execute a balanced music program and organize class time so preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time
  • Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the music curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourage students to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible
  • Utilize a repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils
  • Maintain care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments and equipment to prevent loss or abuse
  • Make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required
  • Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding
  • Meet those standards of performance for his/her individual teaching assignment developed by the Orleans Parish Public School System.  Those standards include the Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching
  • Adjust lesson plans to meet the needs of students in the classroom
  • Guide the learning process of students in the classroom toward the achievement of curriculum goals set by the Orleans Parish Public School System and/or appropriate federal guidelines
  • Assist the administration in implementing all Board policies
  • Achieve those objectives/activities included in the Professional Growth Plan developed jointly with the principal or assistant principal as part of the accountability process mandated by the State Legislature
  • Consult with administrator(s), colleagues, students and/or parent on a regular basis
  • Plan and supervise purposeful tasks for paraprofessional(s) and volunteer(s) assigned
  • Cooperate with administrator and/or department head in assessing the performance of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) assigned
  • Serve on and participate in professional staff committees/meetings required
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Supervises students in various settings including on-campus and off-campus activities, before and after school during drop-off and pick-up, within the classroom, during class transitions, recess/intermission, lunch periods, assemblies, and any other assigned times or locations to ensure their safety and well-being
  • Attends non-instructional activities such as faculty and staff meetings, professional training sessions, IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, back-to-school and open house events, graduation ceremonies, PGP and PIP evaluations, observations, IAP and student discipline meetings/hearings, as well as school board and committee meetings and other meetings as needed/requested
  • Attends meetings and functions of employee sponsored activities, groups, or clubs
  • Attends work concessions/gates as requested by Principal or designee if applicable
