About The Position

It's fun to work in a company where people truly BELIEVE in what they're doing! We're committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business. If you like wild growth and working with happy, enthusiastic over-achievers, you'll enjoy your career with us! Optical Module Integration Engineering Intern (Summer 2026) Overview Join the Optical Module Engineering team at Lumentum, where you will help optimize and tune next-generation DataCom optical modules for maximum performance and reliability. This internship focuses on system-level performance optimization, including improving key optical and electrical metrics such as TDECQ, BER, OMA, and signal integrity. You will work with cross-functional teams across optics, DSP, hardware, and test engineering to analyze multi-parameter datasets and identify the right tuning direction to enhance overall module performance. You will gain hands-on experience with high-speed optical systems, automated test environments, and performance-driven engineering methodologies.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of high-speed optical communication fundamentals (PAM4 signaling, eye diagrams, BER, TDECQ, OMA).
  • Experience writing automation scripts in Python for data collection and analysis.
  • Familiarity with laboratory test equipment such as oscilloscopes, BERTs, optical power meters, or spectrum analyzers.
  • Ability to process multi-parameter datasets and identify performance optimization trends.
  • Basic knowledge of signal integrity and DSP concepts is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented mindset with interest in system-level optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in tuning and optimizing DataCom optical modules to improve TDECQ, BER, OMA, and related performance metrics.
  • Analyze multi-dimensional datasets to understand performance trade-offs across optical, electrical, and DSP parameters.
  • Develop Python automation scripts to control test equipment, collect measurement data, and streamline performance characterization.
  • Process and visualize large datasets to identify key drivers limiting module performance.
  • Correlate device-level parameters (e.g., laser bias, driver settings, equalization parameters) with system-level test outcomes.
  • Propose data-driven optimization directions and validate improvements through controlled experiments.
  • Support debug efforts for performance degradation or margin issues.
  • Document findings and present technical results to engineering teams.
