About The Position

This position provides advanced emergency medical care, as a team member in the emergency department, to the sick and/or injured as trained and licensed by the State of Michigan. The desired result of the paramedic's intervention is improved patient outcome.

Requirements

  • Ability to analyze patient condition, synthesizes all information gathered, and coordinates a precise treatment plan for all emergent conditions.
  • Ability to triage a mass casualty incident (the sorting of and allocation of treatment to patients according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors).
  • Knowledge of cardiac rhythm analysis, pharmacology, invasive techniques including pleural decompression, cricothryotomy, endotracheal intubation, external pacemaker, interosseous access, central and peripheral intravenous access, insertion of esophageal obturator airway, blood sugar analysis, fiberglass application, and non-invasive techniques including pulse oximetry analysis, heart and lung sound analysis, and blood pressure analysis in less than optimal environments.
  • Ability to immobilize any and all potential fractures/dislocations, including spinal cord injuries.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to educate patients and family members.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to console/comfort victim and/or families and friends.
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Required Within 1 month of hire or transfer
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Required Within 3 months of hire or transfer
  • EMT-P - Paramedic Required
  • PALS - Ped Advance Life Support Required Within 1 month of hire or transfer
  • TEAM ADVANCED - Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt Required Within 6 months of hire or transfer (Employees who are in this position on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete this certification)
  • TNCC/ATCN - Trauma Nurse Core Course or ATCN Required Must complete within 12 months of hire or transfer.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the emergency department physicians, mid-levels, and nurses to formulate and initiate a plan of care and/or interventions for patients that present to the emergency department for treatment. These patients include infant to adult patients that present for medical, obstetrical, and traumatic emergencies based on patient assessment findings.
  • Assists with and cares for emergency department patients during their emergency department stay. Competently performs patient care procedures including but not limited to: Intravenous catheter placement and Intravenous (IV) fluid management; wound care including prep and irrigations, application of dressings including burn dressing; removal of sutures and staples; urinary catheterizations; orthopedic splinting, triage, oxygen management, bladder scanning, medication administration based on the medication education provided during paramedic training and the approved emergency department medication list. Monitoring and management techniques including: vital sign interpretation, cardiac rhythm analysis, cardiac defibrillation/ cardioversion, use of external pacemaker, point of care blood glucose analysis, analysis of pulse oximetry, and proper delivery of oxygen therapy.
  • Additional Duties: Additional medical equipment may be utilized to maintain optimal patient care. Examples of equipment include intravenous infusion pump, cardiac monitor, cardiac defibrillator, ventilators, Bi-pap, and external cardiac pacemaker. Documents in EPIC any interventions implemented and outcomes of all patients receiving care. Evaluates readiness and safety of emergency equipment. This includes cardiac monitors, external pacemaker, pulse oximeter, Glidescope, ventilators, Bi-pap, bladder scanner, and any/all equipment required by the State of Michigan. Assists with restocking of supplies; patient rooms, supply carts, trauma rooms.
