About The Position

Park Attendants are responsible for the essential functions as described in this Job Description. These functions can be described as operational. Park Attendant duties include the following major functions: perform a variety of services including helping with various special events, garbage removal, athletic field setup for Park District staff and guests, community relations, external and internal guest services, basic park safety and security inspections, and requesting guest ordinance compliance. Park Attendants will carry out patrol assignments utilizing bicycle or foot patrol techniques. Park Attendants operate motor vehicles at night, during inclement weather, or with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated initiative, dependability, consistent attendance and on-time arrival, good judgment, leadership and the capability to work in a positive, responsible manner with the general public and Park District staff.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English.
  • Ability to walk, bike or drive to and around park locations for up to 8 hours per shift.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision to solve problems and produce work on a timely basis.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and conflict resolution skills in confrontational situations.
  • Ability to use interpersonal skills as it relates to answering questions and providing guest services.
  • Ability to use oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Valid BASSET/TIPS certification or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license is required at the time of being hired.

Nice To Haves

  • College credit in law enforcement or criminal justice from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education is preferred.
  • Experience in customer relations and/or a security position is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Park and Facility Patrol
  • Patrol parks on bicycle, in a District-owned and assigned vehicle, or by foot.
  • Open and close park facilities such as shelters, restrooms, etc.
  • Inspect all park and playground areas for safety or security concerns, excess litter or vandalism/graffiti.
  • Correct minor observations, if possible, and report uncorrected items to the Risk Manager, appropriate facilities and/or maintenance staff and/or law enforcement.
  • Communicate with appropriate staff and/or law enforcement in order to resolve conflict, maintain order or enforce park ordinances if necessary.
  • Assist recreation staff in enforcing sports field guidelines for appropriate and permitted use.
  • Administrative/Recordkeeping
  • Complete all required reporting (digital or otherwise) pertaining to the shift worked.
  • Performs the job safely and in compliance with Park District policies, procedures, work and safety rules.
  • Supports and exhibits the established organizational values of respect, communication, integrity, innovation, recognition, continuous learning, fun, empowerment and people.
  • Completes District-assigned safety and compliance training.
  • Develop knowledge of Park District parks, facilities, operations and ordinances such that the employee can provide factual information directly to guests or refer them to appropriate sources of District-related information.
  • Coordinate assistance as needed from the Risk Manager, other Wheeling Park District staff, the Wheeling Police Department, and/or Village of Wheeling staff.
  • Provide Quality Guest Service and Experiences
  • Reports guest and staff comments, suggestions and requests in a timely manner to the Risk Manager and/or other District staff.
  • Assist guests during permitted field or facility/shelter rentals with any needs they may have in order to make their rental an enjoyable and memorable experience. This includes, but is not limited to, garbage removal, grill setup, and assisting with closing procedures for the applicable facility.
  • Connect with and establish good relations with District guests, answer questions, resolve conflict, provide assistance or enforce ordinances.
  • Special Event Assistance
  • Function as customer service and security presence at District special events
  • Remove and dispose of trash at special events.
  • Direct patrons towards appropriate parking lots during special events.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Park District staff to facilitate special events.
  • Additional Duties
  • Complete all assignments issued by the Risk Manager and/or other District staff and communicate with the Risk Manager and/or other District staff if assignments cannot be completed on the schedule established.
