About The Position

Responsible for operating a district-owned, non-CDL school transportation vehicle over assigned routes, in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations, to safely transport students to out-of-district specialized programs. This position requires operating vehicles in high-traffic areas and outside the district's service boundaries while supporting students with diverse needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Valid Small Vehicle Permit (SVP) or the ability to obtain one
  • Current motor vehicle record meeting district standards
  • Minimum of eight (8) hours of pre-training at District expense
  • Annual re-certification training, including: Supporting students with a variety of needs (medical/medication, physical/motor/wheelchair, behavior management, and safety protocols)
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification (can obtain after hire)
  • CPR and First Aid certification (can obtain after hire)
  • Ability to effectively relate in a positive manner with staff, students, parents, and the public
  • Ability to work with children with varying and complex needs
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful situations
  • Strong problem-solving and de-escalation skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and team lift up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout the workday
  • Ability to bend, crouch, squat, kneel, push, pull, pinch, and grip
  • Visual acuity including close-up, distance, depth perception, color vision, and peripheral vision
  • Auditory acuity sufficient to respond to student needs and emergency situations
  • Ability to remain alert and attentive at all times

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students with various learning, behavioral, social/emotional, and/or communication needs
  • Prior driving experience in high-traffic areas

Responsibilities

  • Operate a district non-CDL transportation vehicle over scheduled routes as directed
  • Perform pre-trip inspections to ensure all equipment and safety devices are in safe, proper operating condition
  • Maintain a professional, defensive driving attitude at all times
  • Maintain appropriate student behavior to ensure safe transportation
  • Immediately report emergencies, breakdowns, delays, or student discipline concerns via radio or telephone
  • Report all accidents, hazards, damage, or vandalism as soon as possible
  • Prepare and submit daily transportation reports
  • Maintain interior and exterior cleanliness of the assigned vehicle
  • May be required to perform night driving, weekend driving, or special daytime trips
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to support the safety and well-being of students with diverse learning, behavioral, medical, and mobility needs
