About The Position

The Supervisor leads and supports departmental staff, monitors performance and compliance, and collaborates closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, perioperative services, nursing leadership, and ancillary departments to reduce day-of-surgery delays and cancellations. This position plays a key role in optimizing patient flow, enhancing the patient experience, and ensuring regulatory and organizational standards are consistently met.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid state nursing license.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in perioperative care, surgical services, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and common pre-operative procedures.
  • Ability to perform patient assessments, collect and interpret diagnostic information, and recognize potential complications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative healthcare environment.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Compassionate, patient-centered, and able to provide high-quality care in a fast-paced setting.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required; ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in pre-admission testing, patient education, or post-operative care is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Department Leadership & Supervision Supervise and support Pre-Admission Testing and Scheduling staff to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered operations Provide daily oversight of staffing, workflows, productivity, and workload distribution Serve as a clinical and operational resource for staff, addressing questions, concerns, and process barriers in real time Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement Participate in recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention of departmental staff
  • Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Operations Oversee all Pre-Admission Testing processes, including medical history collection, medication reconciliation, patient education, and pre-operative clearance coordination Ensure PAT assessments are completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and surgeon/anesthesia protocols Coordinate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, nursing units, and ancillary departments to resolve clearance issues and reduce day-of-surgery delays or cancellations Monitor PAT completion rates and intervene proactively to address gaps or delays
  • Surgical & Procedural Scheduling Oversight Oversee surgical and procedural scheduling processes to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and optimal use of operating room and procedural resources Ensure schedules are built in accordance with surgeon block times, facility capacity, staffing availability, and case priority Collaborate with perioperative leadership to address scheduling conflicts, add-ons, and emergent cases Ensure scheduling documentation is complete, accurate, and communicated clearly to patients, providers, and departments
  • Patient Experience & Communication Ensure timely and professional communication with patients regarding testing requirements, scheduling details, preparation instructions, and arrival times Address patient concerns or complaints related to PAT or scheduling in a timely and compassionate manner Promote patient understanding, preparedness, and satisfaction throughout the pre-operative process
  • Quality, Compliance & Safety Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and hospital standards (e.g., CMS, Joint Commission, state regulations) Monitor adherence to pre-operative safety protocols, including required testing, documentation, and consent processes Participate in audits, quality initiatives, and performance improvement activities related to pre-operative services Identify trends in errors, delays, or cancellations and implement corrective actions
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting Track and analyze key performance indicators such as PAT completion rates, cancellation rates, scheduling accuracy, and patient throughput Provide data, reports, and insights to perioperative and executive leadership as requested Utilize data to drive process improvement and support operational decision-making
  • Education & Staff Development Ensure staff competency through ongoing education, skills validation, and policy updates Coach and mentor staff to support professional growth and performance improvement Conduct performance evaluations and contribute to disciplinary actions when necessary in collaboration with leadership and HR
  • Collaboration & Process Improvement Collaborate with perioperative services, anesthesia, nursing leadership, surgeons, IT, and administrative teams to streamline workflows Lead or participate in process improvement initiatives aimed at reducing cancellations, improving access, and enhancing patient flow Support hospital initiatives related to efficiency, patient safety, and patient satisfaction
  • Administrative & Operational Responsibilities Maintain departmental policies, procedures, and standard work documentation Assist with budgeting, staffing plans, and resource utilization as assigned Participate in leadership meetings, committees, and hospital projects related to perioperative and pre-operative services
