About The Position

Greets and gathers information from patients upon admission; records necessary personal information, secures required signatures; verifies method of payment and collects any co-payment at time of service; collects prepares and supplies patient data to various hospital departments.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and questions form residents, family members, medical staff, and other employees and the general public.
  • Employee must possess and apply good customer service skills with all patients and staff.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of office or hospital clerical experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is desired.
  • One to three months’ on-the-job training.

Responsibilities

  • Contacts patients and/or interviews patient at the hospital prior to admission to obtain needed information
  • Entering preadmission information on elective and maternity patients into the computer.
  • Screening insurance information to identify patients requiring preadmission approval from third-party payers
  • Verifying that approval has been obtained
  • Notifying patients’ accounts of admissions for surgery or other self-paying admissions.
  • Explains hospital policies and answers patient inquiries.
  • Greets and receives patients to be admitted.
  • Conducts personal interview to obtain required demographic and insurance information, and enters it into computer
  • Reviews preadmission information for accuracy and completeness.
  • Obtains required signatures on legal consents and insurance forms.
  • Hands out patient information literature.
  • Creates patient identification band and places on patient
  • Notifies nursing unit of patient’s arrival.
  • Notifies certain insurance companies on daily basis of the admission of their subscribers and logs notifications made.
  • Collects any appropriate or required insurance co-payment from patient at time of registration.
  • On designated shifts, calculates daily census and verifies accuracy of nursing unit census listings.
  • Answers daily inquiries of patients and public in person or via telephone regarding admission procedures; hospital regulations and services, when necessary, referring inquiries to appropriate person or department; provides directions for finding other areas within the hospital.
  • Comply with the personnel policies, department policies and CHS Code of Conduct.
  • Other work duties as assigned
