About The Position

Under the guidance of the Association Director of People & Culture (HR), the People and Culture Specialist will assist in the day-to-day operations of employee engagement, cultural development, and the full recruiting life cycle. The People and Culture Specialist is a vital role focused on creating and maintaining a positive, engaging, and productive work environment. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of experience in human resources, recruiting, or a similar role, is required.
  • Excellent discretion and judgement when dealing with sensitive materials and confidential information.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Experience with full-cycle recruiting, using various interview techniques and evaluation methods.
  • Must be organized and detail-oriented, with leadership skills and an understanding talent acquisition best practices and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • College coursework towards Bachelor’s degree in a Human Resources related field or work towards a HR certification (eg, SHRM-CP, SHRM SCP, PHR, SPHR) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Applicant Tracking Systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with hiring managers to identify staffing needs. Create and implement a recruitment strategy to meet those needs, including supporting technology used in the strategy.
  • Work with the marketing team to create needed collateral and social media marketing for all recruitment needs.
  • Develop relationships within YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit’s communities to deepen applicant pools.
  • Organize and attend job fairs and recruitment events to build a strong candidate pipeline.
  • Work with HR and Risk Management teams to ensure interview questions reflect compliance requirements as well as HR best practices.
  • Oversee the new hire onboarding process to ensure a smooth and welcoming experience for new employees.
  • Work with HR team to provide new hire orientations and help them acclimate to the Association's culture and values.
  • Manage the off boarding process, including conducting exit interviews to gather valuable feedback.
  • Update YMCA training materials as needed to ensure they encompass current program practices. Ensure all current materials are posted on the Association’s intranet.
  • Act as a champion for the Association’s culture, ensuring it is reflected in all HR practices and employee interactions. Lead the staff committee on culture and belonging.
  • Works with Association branches, sites and departments to create a welcoming and engaging environment for all staff.
  • Plan and execute programs and events that promote employee engagement and morale, such as social events, and recognition programs.
  • Gather and analyze employee feedback through surveys and one-on-one conversations to identify areas for improvement.
  • Build relationships with local colleges/universities to increase internship and work-study program candidates.
