About The Position

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to join a dynamic and interactive group engaged in the study of molecular viral pathogenesis using the mammalian reovirus and piscine orthoreovirus systems. Projects are available in many areas of reovirus biology, including viral attachment protein structure, vaccine development, viral superinfection exclusion, viral transmission, and virus-host interactions leading to neurologic disease. Responsibilities include directing scientific studies, presenting progress and next steps at routine meetings (e.g., bi-yearly lab meetings and journal clubs, biweekly working groups, monthly 1:1s with Dr. Dermody, and quarterly career development lunches/breakfasts), and advising and supporting trainees within the Dermody laboratory. There are no requirements to co-manage or supervise the lab, as these tasks are managed by faculty and technicians within the lab. However, successful candidates are engaged in informal teaching and training opportunities within the lab, and will be active contributors to grant development and writing, and responsible for preparing first-drafts of manuscripts from any publishable studies. The hiree will also be required to follow an NIH-approved data management and sharing plan, for which good laboratory notebook skills are essential. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a biomedical field and possess strong communication skills. If a Ph.D. is in the process of completion, the offer is contingent on successful completion of the degree. Applicants should have proficiency in molecular and cellular biology. Experience in studies of viral replication and pathogenesis is desirable.
