About The Position

Employees in this position determine an applicant’s eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits based on the reason the individual separated from their last employer. Employees review and evaluate claim information and, if needed, investigate conflicting information provided by applicants and employers. Employees also ensure that all pertinent information used to evaluate the claim is documented in the case file and apply applicable law to issue formal eligibility determinations at the end to the review. This work requires considerable interpretation of laws and rules and the ability to analyze facts to determine the appropriate course of action. Employees also ensure that all pertinent information used to evaluate the claim is documented in the case file and apply applicable law to issue formal eligibility determinations at the end to the review. This work requires considerable interpretation of laws and rules and the ability to analyze facts to determine the appropriate course of action. The Division of Employment Security is responsible for the administration of the unemployment insurance program in the state of North Carolina. This program is a federal-state partnership, funded by federal and state unemployment taxes, which employers pay on the wages of their employees. Benefits are paid to eligible workers who lose their job through no fault of their own and are able, available, and actively seeking work. The Adjudication Unit is responsible for making initial determinations for unemployment claims. Employees in this unit gather and review claim information and use North Carolina’s Employment Security Law to make eligibility determinations regarding an individual’s separation from employment. Employees also make first-level decisions regarding an individual’s continued eligibility for benefits based on weekly filing requirements.

Requirements

  • Strong communication and customer service skills in order to obtain relevant and accurate information from all interested parties in a timely manner.
  • Strong writing skills to properly articulate all necessary findings and rationale for each determination.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to efficiently manage and timely resolve all assigned cases.
  • The ability to analyze facts, evaluate conflicting information, and correctly apply relevant law to those facts in a production-oriented environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
