About The Position

RK&K is seeking an experienced technical Electric Utility Project Delivery Leader to establish, grow, and provide senior technical oversight for our electric utility design practice. This role requires deep expertise in electric power distribution and transmission engineering, a proven ability to develop engineering staff, and strong capability in leading multi‑disciplinary design teams. You will guide the planning, design, and execution of electric utility projects; develop a high‑performance electric utility engineering team through structured training, mentoring, and targeted recruitment; and play a significant role in strengthening RK&K’s presence in the electric utility market.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in electric utility engineering, including distribution and/or transmission design, utility relocation engineering, or power system analysis.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (preferred) or Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Strong proficiency with utility design standards (e.g., NESC, IEEE), utility‑specific design criteria, and regional regulatory requirements.
  • Experience mentoring or managing technical engineering staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or managing an electric utility design team.
  • Experience with PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, CYME, Milsoft, or other electric system design software.
  • Experience supporting major infrastructure projects with significant electric utility impacts or relocations.
  • Familiarity with Design‑Build, CMAR, or P3 delivery involving utility components.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, analysis, and design of overhead and underground electric distribution and transmission systems, including feeder upgrades, reliability improvements, joint‑use accommodations, duct bank design, substation interfaces, system protection considerations, and energized cutover planning.
  • Provide senior technical oversight for load calculations, structural analysis of poles, conductor sizing, grounding design, cable pulling calculations, fault current analysis, and protective device coordination.
  • Establish rigorous quality‑assurance and quality‑control procedures for technical deliverables, including construction drawings, technical specifications, calculations, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate directly with electric utility owners, regulatory authorities, transportation agencies, and internal engineering disciplines to resolve conflicts and ensure technically sound, constructible designs.
  • Develop and expand an electric utility engineering group aligned with workload forecasts, technical capabilities, and strategic growth objectives.
  • Develop and implement structured training programs in electric utility engineering fundamentals, software tools (e.g., CYME, Milsoft, PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, AutoCAD/MicroStation), design standards, and QA/QC best practices.
  • Provide senior‑level mentorship emphasizing technical accuracy, engineering judgment, and design efficiency.
  • Lead targeted recruitment efforts to build technical depth and diversify capabilities within the team.
  • Direct multi‑disciplinary project teams and subconsultants performing distribution and transmission design, field investigations, structural evaluations, and system modeling.
  • Manage project scopes, schedules, and budgets with a strong focus on technical risk management, schedule-critical utility relocations, and interface with transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare and lead technical presentations, design coordination meetings, constructability reviews, and utility owner approval processes.
  • Support complex interface projects involving DOT corridors, municipal infrastructure, and third‑party joint‑use requests.
  • Lead strategic business development efforts aimed at growing RK&K’s electric utility engineering portfolio.
  • Establish and maintain technical credibility and trusted‑advisor relationships with electric utilities, cooperatives, EPC firms, and infrastructure owners.
  • Lead technical content development for proposals, engineering work plans, design scopes, labor hour estimates, and project execution strategies.
  • Participate in industry organizations and conferences to strengthen RK&K’s technical presence in the electric power sector.
