About The Position

The Quality Engineering team at The New York Times is hiring a QA Engineer. You will work with software engineers, DevOps, product managers, and designers to support quality across our web, mobile, and API platforms. You will develop automated test frameworks, strengthen CI/CD reliability, and improve release confidence through scalable automation practices. This role is hybrid and based in New York City, with an expectation of two days per week in the office. You will report to the Senior QA Manager.

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in test automation, software engineering, or quality engineering
  • Proficiency in Python and experience building maintainable automation frameworks
  • 3 years of experience with modern test automation tools such as PyTest, Playwright, Selenium, or Appium
  • 3 years of experience testing REST, GraphQL, or gRPC APIs
  • Hands-on experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI)
  • 3 years of experience with Docker and familiarity with Kubernetes
  • 3 years of experience working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with mobile test automation
  • Experience with test environment provisioning and infrastructure-as-code
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) in software development workflows
  • Experience improving observability or quality metrics within engineering teams

Responsibilities

  • Design automated testing frameworks in Python for APIs, web, and mobile applications
  • Develop and integrate automated test workflows into CI/CD pipelines
  • Improve test reliability, execution speed, and coverage across environments
  • Develop scalable test environments using containerization and cloud infrastructure
  • Collaborate with engineering, DevOps, and product teams to define test strategies early in the development lifecycle
  • Integrate logging, monitoring, and metrics into testing workflows to improve defect detection and release confidence
  • Contribute to documentation and standards for automation and TestOps
