About The Position
The Recreation Program Counselor plays an essential role in creating a safe, fun, and welcoming environment for youth participating in the Tribe’s seasonal recreation programs. The Recreation Program Counselor actively participates in daily activities, engages youth in meaningful ways, and helps ensure that every participant feels included, supported, and encouraged. The incumbent in this position is caring, patient, and passionate about working with children. This role requires a positive attitude, strong teamwork, and the ability to remain calm, focused, and solution‑oriented during the busiest times. This role builds positive relationships with children, models professional and respectful behavior, and contributes to an environment where creativity, confidence, and social development thrive.
Requirements
- Demonstrates a caring, patient, and genuinely child‑focused approach
- Enthusiastic and willing to actively participate in activities and model engagement for youth
- Ability to inspire, motivate, and encourage youth participation
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- A consistently positive attitude and professional demeanor
- Ability to stay calm, focused, and supportive in fast‑paced or high-energy situations
- Understanding of group dynamics, youth development, and conflict resolution
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, contributing to a positive group environment
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Either higher education in the field of childhood education (or similar field of study) OR experience working with school-age children through camp, recreational, or educational setting
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification required (training provided)
- Successful candidate must pass the background check and continue to be eligible for employment in accordance with The Mohegan Tribe’s Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Policy
- Must be at least 18 years old
