About The Position

The Recreation Special Assistant Counselor plays an essential role in creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment, providing attentive care to all children, especially those with diverse or special needs. The Recreation Special Assistant Counselor actively participates in daily activities, engages youth in meaningful ways, and helps ensure that every participant feels included, supported, and encouraged. The incumbent in this position is caring, patient, and passionate about working with children. This role requires a positive attitude, strong teamwork, and the ability to remain calm, focused, and solution‑oriented during the busiest times. This role builds positive relationships with children, models professional and respectful behavior, and contributes to an environment where creativity, confidence, and social development thrive.

  • Enthusiastic and willing to actively participate in activities and model engagement for youth
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and encourage youth participation
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A consistently positive attitude and professional demeanor
  • Ability to stay calm, focused, and supportive in fast‑paced or high‑energy situations
  • Understanding of group dynamics, youth development, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, contributing to a positive group environment
  • Working knowledge of behavior management techniques and restraint training programs such as Physical/Psychological Management Training (PMT) or similar
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Either higher education in the field of childhood education (or similar field of study) OR one (1) year of experience as a special education paraprofessional in a public and/or private school setting
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification required (training provided)
  • Successful candidate must pass the background check and continue to be eligible for employment in accordance with The Mohegan Tribe’s Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Policy
  • Must be at least 18 years old

Nice To Haves

  • Training in behavior management and restraint training, preferred
