About The Position

These Recreation Site Technician positions are located in the Helena Valley, specifically at Spring Meadow Lake State Park, Black Sandy State Park and occasionally the 6 Fishing Access Sites managed by FWP in the Helena Valley. Helena is the capitol city which is a haven of rich arts, culture, and history and is centrally located to provide ample outdoor opportunities, entertainment, health care, and shopping. Home to nearly 60,000 residents, the Helena Valley is growing. Nearly every outdoor activity available in Montana is accessible in or around Helena, including hiking, road and mountain biking, hunting, fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing areas. The city offers an extensive hiking and biking trail system including Mount Helena, the largest city owned park in the country. Spring Meadow Lake State Park is one of the most visited State Parks in Montana and offers hiking trails with exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing, swimming, fishing, boating, jogging, and many other activities. The site offers a contracted boat rental concession, an extremely popular rentable outdoor pavilion venue, and connects to the community via the Centennial Trail linking East Helena with Fort Harrison. Black Sandy State Park is an extremely popular weekend boating, fishing, camping, picnicking, and water-skiing location. Black Sandy offers 29 campsites with electricity and 6 tent sites. These are seasonal worker positions with an anticipated season usually lasting mid-May through late September. Start and end dates can be weather dependent. The schedule for these positions will be full-time daily with midweeks off as weekend staffing is required. Weekend, evening, and holiday work is required. The incumbents will be expected to work independently, often doing heavy physical labor in adverse weather conditions. Good physical condition is essential. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education
  • General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits

Nice To Haves

  • One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with daily operations of Spring Meadow Lake and/or Black Sandy State Parks and the Helena area Fishing Access Sites (FAS)
  • Administrative tasks
  • Providing customer service
  • Maintenance/janitorial tasks
  • Assisting with interpretation and education programs as needed
  • Staffing the ranger stations and engage in tasks such as providing information to the public, collecting fees, selling enterprise items, answering phone calls, and opening/closing daily financial sessions
  • Patrolling parks and FAS by foot or vehicle, ensure rule compliance through information/education and when necessary, aid enforcement staff with incidents
  • Monitoring the park for hazards and take corrective actions or notify supervisors
  • Maintenance and janitorial tasks such as cleaning latrines, cleaning picnic/day use areas, collecting trash, mowing, weed trimming, removal of noxious weed, general landscaping, and trail work
  • Be a uniformed representative of the State of Montana and will be expected to represent the State in a positive manner while answering questions, providing information, and ensuring park rule compliance
