The Special Care Nursery (SCN) is a twelve-bed level IIB unit that provides care for high risk newborns who were born prematurely or with medical complications. Patients in the SCN include both infants born at Beverly Hospital and transfers in following treatment at tertiary care facilities. The SCN Registered Nurses and Board Certified Neonatologists provide care for infants 32 weeks gestation or greater who require the following clinical care: frequent observation; cardiorespiratory monitoring; oxygen therapy; intravenous hydration and medications; gavage feedings blood transfusions and/or exchange transfusions. For infants born less than 32 weeks gestation, nursing will work in conjunction with the medical team to stabilize and transport these neonates to the appropriate tertiary care facility.
