About The Position

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is seeking a Research Services Librarian to join our library located in Washington, D.C. The DAR's national headquarters complex includes the DAR Library, one of the nation's premier genealogical research centers. The Library collection contains over 200,000 physical volumes, including genealogical compilations, record abstracts, and other materials such as family histories, cemetery record transcriptions, and Bible records that are available only at the DAR Library. As we are considered one of the preeminent sources for genealogical research, we receive numerous requests from patrons that involve going through our collections to find the answers. The DAR is seeking a Research Services Librarian to manage the incoming workflow and ensure deadlines are met. The incumbent in this role will receive all incoming requests and work with the appropriate staff member to set deadlines and delivery schedules. This position will be responsible for genealogical research requests submitted to our library. Our Research Services Librarian will also serve as a 'research educator' to promote the library and its research services. The successful candidate will be someone who is detail-oriented, has experience in project management, and is a well-rounded researcher. Reports to: Assistant Director of the Library

Requirements

  • MLIS degree in Library Science/Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • 3 -5 years of relevant library experience, preferably in reference, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of previous experience conducting genealogical research.
  • Prior experience in a library setting performing reference services is required.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals.
  • Strong project management skills with a focus on deadlines and a demonstrated ability to shift focus if needed.
  • Proficiency with basic office software, research databases such as OnBase and library catalog software, and familiarity with payment processing and file delivery tools.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews all incoming research requests, distributes to appropriate departments, and coordinates timeframes, delivery, and payments for services.
  • Communicates policies regarding research requests, and provides guidance on timelines, available resources, and fee structures.
  • Conducts genealogical research for patrons on a paid basis using DAR resources.
  • Manages photocopy requests for the book collection and works with Archivists on photocopy requests from our manuscript and Americana collections.
  • Participates in outreach activities and serve as a resource educator to promote our research services.
  • Will work with staff to identify new technologies for better workflow and improve existing systems for payment, file delivery, and communication.
  • The position will assist researchers at the Library reference desk on a regular basis.
  • Occasional weekend hours will be required.
