The August Camp Assistant Manager supports the overall operation of AMC’s August Camp, a nomadic hiking camp for adults that has operated since 1887. Serving approximately 65 guests per week across four one-week sessions, the Camp provides guided hikes and recreational programming led by volunteer August Camp Committee Members, Hike Leaders, and Camp Director(s), while the Croo manages hospitality and camp operations. The Assistant Manager helps ensure a safe, welcoming, and smoothly run environment by greeting guests, fostering community, and maintaining positive interactions. They collaborate closely with the Camp Manager on daily operations, assist with site setup and staff training during prep week, support morale and team cohesion, and step in as needed with hospitality, meal service, cleaning, and general camp upkeep. The Assistant Manager also supports basic administrative tasks, reservations, and ongoing maintenance coordination to help maintain an organized and efficient camp environment. This is a full-time seasonal position from July 9 through August 20, 2026, in Concrete, WA (near Seattle, WA). The season consists of four week-long sessions of routine camp operations, bookended by approximately one week each for site setup and take-down. Transportation to and from the site is covered by August Camp. Expect a 44–50 hour work week, with 8–10 hour days split between morning and evening shifts, and two shifts (one full day) off per week. Shifts generally run from 6:00am–9:00am and 4:00pm–9:00pm, with late mornings and early afternoons available for rest or personal recreation.

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of experience in hospitality, outdoor recreation, camp management, or a related supervisory role
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including staff supervision and team development
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a detail-oriented, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to foster a respectful and welcoming group dynamic
  • Ability to work in a field camp setting in varied weather conditions and maintain flexibility within a non-traditional schedule (early mornings, mid-day breaks, evening responsibilities)
  • Ability to complete minor building and grounds repairs and familiarity with basic hand and power tools
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate Camp vehicles; completion of AMC driver authorization requirements
  • Commitment to AMC’s mission of fostering the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the outdoors
  • Physical abilities: Ability to stand, sit, bend, walk uneven terrain, and lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist or waist to head height. Ability to live and sleep comfortably in an outdoor setting in a canvas tent and maintain good health throughout the Camp season.

Responsibilities

  • Welcoming campers, fostering a warm and inclusive community atmosphere, and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all guests
  • Covering Manager responsibilities when the Manager is off duty
  • Assisting with Prep Week activities, including camp setup, vendor arrangements, and staff training
  • Supporting the daily operation of Camp across four week-long sessions
  • Supervising Croo responsibilities, including scheduling, workflow oversight, hospitality service, grounds upkeep, and general camp maintenance
  • Stepping in to assist with meal service, cleaning, supply organization, and other operational needs during busy periods
  • Monitoring camp facilities and grounds, tracking repair needs, and coordinating maintenance priorities with the Manager
  • Operating Camp vehicles responsibly as part of assigned duties
  • Upholding AMC standards for safety, hospitality, and environmental stewardship in all Camp operations
